A prefect place to stay in Takayama
Soy is a beautifully restored old silk-producing farmhouse (about 150 years old) with lots of wooden beams, now used as accommodation with fantastic Japanese hospitality. Tai (who speaks excellent English), and his family, are completely focussed on providing the best experience for guests. We arrived in the afternoon in rain - Tai met us at the station, took our luggage and provided umbrellas (it was raining) for the three of us to enjoy Takayama before going to the accommodation later - just so typical of how thoughtful he and the whole the family are. He then picked us up from the art gallery above the town, after our afternoon walk. The house is beautifully furnished, with a wood burning stove, which heats the whole building - it was chilly outside at night. Sleeping was on futons, which were made up for us, and were very comfortable, and yukatas were provided. Breakfast was a choice of western or Japanese both just perfectly presented (his mother is an excellent cook). Tai then dropped us off in town with suggestions of what to see, and later met us with our luggage at the railways station, after a day walking round the market, temples and the castle remains. Some have mentioned noise from the nearby road, to one side of the house, which is on a viaduct - we did not notice any and slept very well! What we did notice, was the garden which is serene and the fields of crops nearby. A great example of family-run accommodation at a very high standard, and a very good alternative to hotels to experience real Japanese hospitality.

Unrivaled Charm and Hospitality
Soy was a beautiful experience! The Kogawa family was so friendly--for example, Kei drove us to our destinations and came to pick us up as well. He even brought our luggage to the station for us after we did some sightseeing, hours after we checked out. The breakfasts were delicious (we had a choice between Western and Japanese, both fantastic), and the rooms were full of comfort and charm. The Kura Room we stayed in had a beautiful wooden bathtub that was a wonderful hot soak, as well as a whole entertainment room on the second floor. I highly recommend it.
One drawback: if you look at the map, you might notice that Soy is located very close to the freeway. I worried about it as well, and it's not ideal--if you're a very light sleeper, it might be a problem. However, my husband slept soundly and even I (a much lighter sleeper) could sleep fine simply by running some white noise on my device.
And of course I have to mention Tara, the adorable and sweet Soy cat! Hanging out in front of the warm stove and drinking tea after a day of sightseeing while admiring Tara will always be a happy memory for me.

I feel you really need to experience it yourself to truly understand just how amazing it is.
From the very beginning of out stay at Soy Guesthouse I knew it would be the highlight of our trip to Japan. Tai-San met us at the train station and took us back to the guesthouse where Nobuko-San greeted us with Japanese tea. The Guesthouse is warm and inviting, filled with beautiful locally sourced furniture and soft jazz music. Every detail was carefully considered, from the delicious traditional Japanese breakfast Nobuko-San cooked with love each morning to the hospitality Tai-San graced us with. Tai helped us with local restaurant recommendations and reservations, shuttled us to and from Takayama’s city centre and helped us with really anything that we needed. I honestly feel I’ve made a life long friend in Tai-San and his family. I’ve attempted to put into words just how fabulous this guesthouse is but I feel you really need to experience it yourself to truly understand just how amazing it is. I can’t wait to stay again soon.

Top-notched Hospitality
The hosts turned a beautiful old house into a cozy, welcoming home. Clean and organized, our room was big for Japan's standards. We had a separate bath and toilet, a spacious room with 2 single beds and 2 lounge chairs, and even a second floor where we could watch films (although mostly Japanese) or just lounge around to read a book.
The service and breakfast were impeccable. There is a choice of Western and Japanese breakfast. I recommend trying the Japanese breakfast, but the Western-style breakfast is also good.
Tai and his parents were the epitome of hospitality. Despite the guesthouse's location outside the city center, Tai always went above and beyond to ensure our convenience, offering to drive us to and from the city. While a bus service is available, we never found the need to use it.
Highly recommend.

INCREDIBLE
It is an unforgettable experience. Staying at SOY is having a real approach to Japanese culture. Tai-San (our host) treated us extremely well, he is incredible, very attentive, he took us and guided us to the points we wanted to go, he also helped us make reservations for transportation back to Kyoto. He made sure we were okay, from purchasing tickets to choosing a seat on the bus.
The guest house is typical Japanese from the moment they welcome you at the entrance with a very welcoming “Okaerinasai”, its delicious breakfast, well-made setting, relaxing view of the garden (beautiful), adequate bathrooms, hot water and its typical Japanese rooms with futon (surprisingly comfortable) (feels like a typical “firm” Western mattress).
Upon our departure we were bid farewell to the house with a typical “Itterasshai” and a handmade obento by Tai-San's mother (delicious).
I definitely recommend this experience to feel what it would be like to live in Japan casually even for a few days, you won't be able to get this from a big hotel.
