Gladly again

We stayed at Wilson and his family's place for one night last week. The accommodation is simple but clean. They try to make everything possible and the campfire in the evening was also worth an experience. On the way to Wilson we have already seen a lot of animals and from there to the national park we were also mega surprised. Should we come again, we would book again!

A bubble of peace

Even in the middle of the high season, we found a bubble of peace at this small-scale campsite/lodge. The location is beautiful and very quiet and calm. Wilson, his wife Rachel, their children, and their lovely dogs gave us a warm welcome. The lodge we stayed in was very basic (no hot water and only limited electricity), but had everything we needed. Highly recommended if you like camping and appreciate being close to nature.

Highlight of my 8 month backpacking trip

WOW, I had the most amazing 4 nights at We4Kenya!! From the moment I arrived, I felt like family. Wilson is incredibly generous and accommodating, and feels more like a friend than simply a host. The view of Kilimanjaro is breathtaking. The campfire under the stars at night is homey and inviting. The camp is just outside of the park amongst Maasai villages, and it is a wonderful experience to be immersed in the culture in an authentic, non-touristic way. I also did the motorcycle safari and explored the villages by bike which I really enjoyed. All in all I can’t recommend We4Kenya enough!! It will always have a special place in my heart and I can honestly say that in 8 months of backpacking in Africa, my experience at We4Kenya is one of the highlights of my trip. Thank you Wilson, Moses, Melvin, Isaiah, Rachel (and baby Max) for all of the hospitality! I can’t wait to come back again one day :)

HAZARDOUS LODGE FOR PERSONAL HEALTH AND PROPERTY - Worst experience in 3 weeks trip

Faulty gate caused our rental car's tire to burst. Owner insisted that "any damage to a car is always the fault of the driver and never (!) anyone's else". We got worried with the owner's understanding and liability and hence we asked if that's the case with our personal health as well - according to the terms of condition "WE4Kenya is not responsible for ANY personal accident, death or any other medical issues".
Do not believe the great location rating. These are either outdated, fake or solely based on the direct distance between the park and the lodge. You will need between 1.5 and 6 (!) hours from the closest gate to the lodge. Any early morning or late afternoon activity in the park is therefore NOT possible.
We left the park at 5.30pm to go to the lodge, assuming its a quick drive. As the owner of the lodge told us via email that they offer a free motorbike guide to guide us to the lodge we called. Once the driver appeared, it took 1.5h through the night. It was pitch black, we drove through fields (actual fields, no dirt roads!) and mud. Once we arrived at the lodge, we crossed the lodge's gate and our tire broke. The staff came and pointed out the faulty gate. Once the owner appeared he insisted that it could not have been the gate and that his employees don't think so either (even though an hour earlier they were pointing at the gate).
We were not amused about the broken tire, neither were we happy about the lie that the lodge is close to the park. The owner said we were lucky as other guests needed 6 HOURS to arrive. When we told him he should have told us in advance he said he would never tell someone it takes longer because it always depends on the driver and hence just the information that you have to take another way must suffice.
After all, we lost our New Years eve celebration (it all happened on Dec 31st) and our day in the park (even though we had already paid 120 usd in fees) as we did not have a spare wheel anymore. After long negations, the owner agreed on giving us 20 USD discount.

Nice environment

very warmhearted reception

I read all these bad reviews. People have wrong expectations of a budget camp and one can see on Google maps that it is remote. On request Wilson supplies written instructions how to find the camp. We came with a 4-wheel drive after it had rained heavily 1 or 2 days before. The road was very adventurous in places but it took us about 35 minutes to arrive. We were greeted by all the staff and offered an upgrade from tent to one of the little houses because it was not fully booked. How nice of them! It was clean enough, there were towels even flannels and flip flops for the lava stone floor shower. The toilet was great, no walking through the night. The quality of the food was good with some local flavour, it is a budget camp and not a gourmet temple - the breakfast pancakes were fantastic! Because the weather was so unpredictable and it was not very hot, they suggested to do a full day safari in case we had to take the long way (2h) but luck was with us, the short cut (15min) was passable. If you are not a local, you cannot find the way!!! We think only 1 night is too short. One does not get enough sleep and is stressed out. We stayed 2 nights, all relaxed with sitting at the campfire in the evening. We were very lucky and saw Kilimancharo each day for a little while without any cloud. Wilson built his camp all from scratch and by himself. We wish him best of luck with his further improvements. The last addition was the restaurant and kitchen building. It was a little unclear from our communications with Wilson, but the fee for the game park is not included in the price of the safari. It must be paid by card at the entrance of the park.
