A Night Stay

Cozy place, good bed and friendly staff.
Easy to find transport to Poring Hot Spring and back to the City, Kota Kinabalu.
Good restaurant nearby.
Can get a beer at one of the corner shop nearby which closed at 10.00pm.

Ranau Backpackers Hostel is in the center of town, and since Ranau is such a small town, food & stores are all within walking distance. It’s also right across from the central market. I stayed in a twin room with private bathroom good for a solo traveler like me. The A/C in the room worked well, as well as WiFi, and overall the room was good, except the bed / mattress was too hard & hence not comfortable; the same goes for the pillow. There’s self-serve breakfast, which consists of coffee, tea, bread and jam. You can also make coffee or tea all day. The staff here is super friendly, esp. Jacinta, who helped me get a ride to Poring Hot Springs as well as point out the bus stops to Kinabalu Park and towards Sandakan. Overall, this is a good budget place to stay, esp. for backpackers. Good for a 2-night stay.

Just okay

The bad: Tiny room. Terrible mattress and small bed - one of those awful foam things. Horribly uncomfortable pillow. Tiny bathroom. No pressure with the shower. No mirror above the sink.
The good: Excellent wifi. Polite and helpful staff. Free coffee all day and a basic breakfast. Nice balcony to sit outside and chat with staff/other guests. Central location only a 5 minute walk from the mini bus drop off point, and right across from the central market.
Slightly overpriced at 60myr for a single room but your options are very limited in Ranau so there isn't anything much better around for the same price.
