Sylvia is a THIEF

DO NOT BOOK. WORSE PLACE EVER.
First, Booking is allowing an owner, Sylvia, to rent through your website apartments she obviously do not have availability from even though she had plenty of flats available at that time. I must assume that she has discriminated against us for being homosexuals. We had booked an apartment with shared kitchen, private bathroom and private room.
15 min prior to our arrival, she decided by herself without checking with us first, to change our booked apartment, which was in the Ta’ Xbiebx Seafront. The one she provided us was in front of road works with no sight of the sea. Which worsens the situation even more, our bathroom was not private and anyone could walk in at please. She totally laughed at us when she said she could only accommodate us until the 27th in the morning. We had however paid upfront until the 5th of April.
In particular, she lied that she could not accommodate us.
Above all, it felt so horrible when she literally asked us to CANCEL OURSELVES THE BOOKING SO SHE COULD KEEP THE MONEY FOR HERSELF. If we had proceeded as she had requested, we would’ve lost all our money and we could have not make any claims regarding our stay.
I see Booking as a collaborator with Sylvia trying to steal our money and our happy holidays here in Malta and I will elaborate further on this matter.
After our arrival to the flat, we decided first to directly speak to Sylvia without having Booking involved. We took a long walk to Paceville in the middle of the night when I realised that she was trying to force us to cancel the booking through Booking website. I asked her to liaise directly with Booking if she wanted us out.
We have screenshots of these conversations since they were done via Booking chat, which I must assume you also have access to it. If necessary, we are happy to provide those chats.
We also have whatsapp conversations which she ignored during the day and night.
After this whole ordeal, we decided not to make a big fuss out of it and go and have some drinks outside while we reached out to Booking to try to find a solution.
The first person we spoke to assured us that if what we were saying is true, they would be happy to accommodate us in a different place. This was a 1h conversation on the phone.
Then, at around 00.30 AM we receive a message from Booking saying the owner had provided us with different accommodation for our stay, which is untrue.
At this point, we got really upset and we managed to speak to a customer agent named Alicia. Alicia, who speaks our mother tongue, Spanish -so no place for misunderstandings due to language barriers and, in any case, you can see I’m fully proficient in English-. We stayed for over an hour on the phone.
She said to us that she had cancelled the booking, without asking us first if we had somewhere to stay and told us we had to find a 24h reception hotel or apartment for that night and that she would handle the new booking. We found an alternative in Msida which we liked and she said that by the next day we would have that booking.
We took a taxi ride from Paceville to Sylvia’s apartment, which cost us 14 euro as Alicia was strongly advising us to leave the apartment in the middle of the night, again, assuring us that these costs would be reimbursed and that the next morning we would have our booking for a new apartment.
As instructed, we acted diligently as per Alicia’s advice, found the first hotel 24 hours that we could afford -as we had spent almost 600€ in Sylvia’s booking- and booked into Tropicana hotel and paid 55€ for one night.
A hotel with barely any of the services we would have wished for our stay in Malta.
To our surprise, we woke up the next morning and there were no signs of our conversation with Alicia, only that a refund had been made.
This is far from that Alicia assured us. Suddenly our trip became the worst nightmare. We spoke to another two Booking customer representatives who told us that what Alicia said was a misunderstanding and that this is not the procedure nor the policy of Booking.
I must admit that Alicia never mentioned those words in Spanish, which translate to “procedimientos” and “directivas o políticas de empresa”.
We felt abandoned in Malta, staying in a dodgy hotel and we did not want to move again our things again after the way we had been treated by Booking and the stress this situation had caused us.
What is more unsettling about this whole situation is that when Alicia was asking us to find a new place to stay, we could see in Booking.com how Sylvia had plenty of availability for the same dates nearby the area of Msida, Gzira and Ta Xbiex. Therefore we can only assume we were not “good guests” and we feel discriminated against due to our sexual orientation and that Booking was a participating partner in this discrimination siding with Sylvia who obviously should not be allowed to rent anymore flats on your website.
We have been, several times by now (around 7 hours of our precious time on the phone), that you would refund any costs that this situation have produced us.
We wanted a flat with a kitchen in order to save money and avoid spending money on restaurants, we wanted a flat in order to feel safe and comfortable. We didn’t want to run from a flat in the middle of the night. We did not want to be treated like idiots and hear one thing to then hear the opposite the next day.
This is extremely upsetting and Booking has failed to raise to the occasion and Booking’s word has zero value since it failed to provide us with an alternative accommodation as Alicia, Booking’s customer representative, promised. Which is even worse, Sylvia had plenty of rooms and flats available but she wanted us out by the 27th of March and she wanted us to cancel the booking in order to keep our money.
As instructed by your customer advisors please find below a small spreadsheet with our costs. We hope that Booking now raises to the occasion and make Sylvia pay for every single bit of suffering we had to go through and for the time that we wasted speaking to several customer advisors that could not help us because it wasn’t Booking policies.

DISGUSTING AND IMMORAL

First, when I got to the supposed house, the room was unclean. Second, I was diagnosed with positive covid and the owner just didn't want to know, didn't return the money to me and I shared the house with other people. Now receiving different people and not even the house disinfects. DO NOT VISIT THIS ACCOMMODATION. I will let you some pics of this disgusting place.
