Angela is an amazing painter/artist too

Everything about the magic of this place has already been said by so many reviewers here. I’d like to mention the amazing paintings that Angela does. I bought 3 of them and they are now hanging in my home in Montreal. They are an absolute beauty. See the pics. Thank you Angela for having taken the pain to wrap them so carefully so I could take them with me on the plane. Funny story was when I got to the border officers in Montreal and they asked me what was in the package and I said 3 paintings. They asked “were they done by a famous artist?” I said it depends who you ask. LOL ! They said “OK that’s fine. Thank you! You may leave.”

Thank you for taking the time to post such a lovely review. Thank you also for the photos so I can see the paintings on the wall.
I am so glad you got them home all right.
As you bought them I am encouraged to keep my house a bit like a gallery and have my paintings around all the time.I am also encouraged to keep painting.
Hope to see you again
Best regards
Angela

Beautiful setting

But inconvenient if you don’t have a car. It is far from town and the river can only be crossed by foot (water up to waist), so selfcatering here is not so simple... the rooms are not really equipped for cooking dinner, but there are atleast three supermarkets nearby (10 min by car) and plenty dinner options, but again you need a car :)
The host is really helpful and sets up dolphin or snorkelling tours with locals, which is really great :) the guys running the trip are fishermen and really show respect to the dolphins and the environment on the tour!!! That is not the case withmany local dolphin tours.
It should be said, the pool is more like a jacuzzi or kiddy pool, tiny (enough for small children).

Fabulous Stay

We had a fabulous stay at the River House from 3rd to 6th July 2019. Angela, the owner, was a wonderful hostess and the location was outstanding. Quiet and peaceful and only a few minutes walk from the beach. Angela lent us her kayak, her body boards, a beach umbrella and chairs, she provided wonderful breakfasts and an amazing Mauritian dinner and gave us great insight to her home, Mauritius. The rooms are beautiful as is the whole house. We would highly recommend the River House. Thank you Angela for a wonderful stay and please give Benny and Honey a hug from us.

Great location, very good- but not exceptional

We stayed at the River House for 8 nights in the deluxe room, and the stay was very pleasant. The location is wonderful; the private terrace at the back faces the river and mountains and is lovely and very peaceful. There are only 3 rooms (one deluxe and 2 standard), the standard rooms were also nice... we had the deluxe with the extra living area and kitchenette as we have a toddler and wanted the extra space, otherwise the standard room would have been fine. Breakfast was good in the morning with fruit, toast, yoghurt, eggs, but you have to ask specially for meat... we didn’t discover that until day 5.
However, this place is not exceptional.
We arrived at 6pm on the first night and there was no food, we had no hire car as we had taken a taxi. Other guests had the same issue. If you want dinner you need to request it at least a day in advance. The supermarket and restaurants are a drive away, otherwise the closest place for food is the Tamarina golf course and spa hotel. This place does not cater in the evenings unless by exception, although once a week if all rooms are filled and all guests want dinner, they will do a buffet for 18 euros per person.
There are 3 rescue dogs and whilst they do mind themselves to themselves, they did lie on my lounge and messed it up and I had to clean it up, one of the dogs also pooped in the lawn in front of our veranda and it wasn’t cleaned it, ... we had to ensure our toddler didn’t run into it.
There are lovely birds around, which are also fed, however they also pooped on the breakfast terrace and we had to avoid the bird poo for 3 days before it was cleaned up.
The owner Angela was not there, and other than the nice location and accommodation, we did not receive any other info. When we asked for recommendations of places to visit or things to do, we were referred to brochures or had to research our own places to eat in the local area. (No ‘local’s knowledge’). Whilst the ‘replacement lady’ was very nice and chatty (she tried her best), she was just a stand in to ensure the place still ran. She couldn’t offer suggestions and tried to help , she phoned a friend when we asked for a place with good local food but even then could only suggest a place that was very upmarket.
The staff are obliging whenever you make a request eg for towels, soap, etc , and although this place is very good, it does lack the ‘extra mile’ of hospitality.

Thank you for taking the time to write. I am so sorry you had some problems while I was away. I know there are no restaurants near us on foot so when I am here I do cook in the evening when necessary and there are at least 2 Mauritian Buffet evenings per week for a minimum of 4 guests.( Sometimes more often when requested) I have now organised a system for guests arriving to have a meal in the evening when needed with no notice.
Next time I am away( which is very rare) I shall make sure the person who stays here is better trained to advise on restaurants and excursions as I do.
A guest gave me the third dog which was a stray and lay on your lounger. She has gone to a good home and I only have 2 well behaved dogs now.
We actually have 1 Suite and 2 Deluxe rooms and you were in the Suite which is more suitable for children.
I have taken your advice and make sure to clean the bird poo every day as we feed them bananas every morning and they do leave their 'calling cards' on the balustrade.
