Clean and unique - Go stay a night, before it's too late!
The hotel itself was tired looking, as you'd expect - but the rooms were exceptionally clean and preserved as well as possible. Our "semi lux" room had a view on the Hotel National, a dining room, changing room and two halls. What grandeur that would have been in 1959! The hotel is actually older than the Hotel National.
The dining rooms in the basement caves have sadly closed, and the 5th floor (originally top floor luxury suites?) seem to be closed too - perhaps abandoned due to roof leaks. But reception was friendly and the bakery breakfast available in the reception bar was okay. The joke about running the hot water for 10 minutes is because many buildings in Chisinau run off municipal heating - the hot water literally comes in from a power station 5km away (you can see the massive pipes near the train station) However we got hot water within a minute.
I can't imagine there were more than 20 people staying, and this was August.

shining hotel
This experience is not for the faint of heart. If you’ve ever seen the movie The Shinning and thought I’d be a great idea to stay at a place like that, this is your once in a lifetime opportunity.
The good:
-location is excellent
-the most authentic place I’ve ever been to
-cleanliness acceptable
-fridge available, ours worked
The bad
-terrifying at night, especially the hallway
-no hot water or AC
-loud at night
-broken windows, furniture, and hopes
-no shower curtains
Good luck to those who dare

A preserved Soviet-times hotel.
The hotel's location is a short walk from the railway station, easily navigated to on wide streets. The reception area is immediately to your right as you enter and staffed with English-speakers who quickly check you in.
The rooms are large with a separate big bathroom. Mine also had an anteroom with table and chairs, and a fine view up one if the city's major boulevardes. A breakfast is included, using a voucher provided at check-in, exchanged for a coffee and hot pastry. You'd likely want to source something a bit more substantial elsewhere afterwards, but there's plenty of choice nearby.
But let's be fair, you don't want to stay here for anthing other than the taste of Soviet apparachik life from the 1920s to 1960s. It echoes with history and of high hopes sadly dashed.
It's still alive, even if the empire has gone, and if you visit Chisinau, take the opportunity to experience it - you will not be disappointed.
There are great restaurants within a short walk - the Beerhaus, and The Steakhouse, would be my recommendations to bring you into a more modern era on every metric.
