A soulful Kathmandu experience - far beyond a hotel stay
I came to Kathmandu as a solo traveller, seeking a spiritual experience while also wanting to discover the culture and character of the city. Choosing The Dwarika’s turned out to be an important part of that experience — and, in many ways, an experience in itself!
What I loved most was the space - the incredible sense of openness, the greenery throughout the property, and, above all, the way the beautifully restored Newari woodwork has been preserved and thoughtfully infused into every corner of the hotel. There is an authenticity and warmth to the property that is difficult to replicate. It feels like a living piece of Kathmandu’s heritage rather than a hotel designed around it.
Despite being in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu, Dwarika’s feels like a cocoon - peaceful, unhurried and wonderfully removed from the chaos outside. The ambience is exceptional, particularly when you take the time to simply sit in one of the courtyards and take it all in.
The rooms continue that feeling beautifully - spacious, open and filled with natural light, with large windows bringing in sunshine and a wonderful sense of air and connection with the outdoors. After a day exploring Kathmandu, returning to that space felt wonderfully restorative.
The service, however, is what truly elevated the stay. It was exceptional at every level. Rabin, the Travel Advisor, was fantastic in helping me navigate the practicalities of my visit, while Binodji, my hotel car driver, was warm, courteous and incredibly helpful. Milan, my tour guide, deserves a special mention as well — his knowledge, warmth and understanding of Kathmandu added considerably to my experience of the city and its culture.
And it wasn’t just the people I had specifically asked for help from. The front-desk team, restaurant staff and every single person who met or greeted me seemed genuinely invested in making the stay special. As a solo traveller, that warmth and attentiveness meant a great deal.
The food was another highlight. Both Topan and Krishnarpan offered memorable dining experiences, with wonderful food matched by equally thoughtful service. My final meal in Kathmandu was at Krishnarpan, and it was a fitting way to end the trip — an experience that brought together Nepalese cuisine, hospitality and tradition so beautifully.
What makes The Dwarika’s special is that it doesn’t feel like a luxury hotel that happens to be in Kathmandu. It feels like Kathmandu’s history, craftsmanship, culture and hospitality have been brought together into one extraordinary experience.
I arrived as a solo traveller looking for a journey with a little more meaning, reflection and connection, while hoping to discover something of Kathmandu beyond the usual tourist experience. I left with a much deeper appreciation of the city - and with The Dwarika’s being an integral part of that journey.
A truly exceptional property, exceptional people and an experience I will remember for a very long time. I would return without hesitation.
