Peace and tranquility

Wonderful peaceful oasis away from the hustle and bustle of Thamel. Comfortable rooms, tasty food, helpful staff, gardens great for relaxing in; architectural style respectful of Newari traditions. This is our all-time favourite place to stay in when in KTM

Worst experience I’ve ever found in hospitality.

I made a booking for my parents on this property from the 20/04/2026 to 22/04/2026. While trying to check in at around 8:30PM as they have been travelling from Pokhara to Kathmandu, the person on the reception was intoxicated and claimed that there is no booking under their name and abusing my parents. I booked the hotel looking at the reviews and stars it had but obviously that’s false advertising. I’ve contacted my travel agent to get in touch with them to discuss the issue and apparently they are ignoring them.

The surrounding area was quite busy and a bit messy, which made crossing the streets frustrating. There were only small local shops nearby, and I often needed Google Translate to communicate. The hotel building itself was unique, and most of the staffs were generally helpful and friendly. However, my room was noisy, the carpet was dirty and dusty, and the toilet was difficult to flush — the seat was loose and kept sliding. I myself tried to fix it but couldn’t. The bathroom also had an unpleasant smell. There was a small misunderstanding about my bill due to a staff mistake; after it was resolved, they simply said “okay” and let me go, without offering any apology.

Historic hotel with excellent staff for those who prefer to be outside the tourist area

(Not to be confused with the Vajra Boutique Hotel in Bhaktapur which I also review.)
If you are interested in staying off the beaten path, this hotel is for you! I cannot say enough good things about staying there. My husband stayed there in 1991 when it was outside of the city limits and when we stayed there again 33 years later, we discovered that the manager had been a 19-year-old just starting his career at the hotel in 1991! In early days, the hotel was also the center of a notable theater group.
Grounds. Lovely and peaceful. The rooms are spread across 2 medium-sized buildings. Two smaller buildings join to create the outline of a compound with a few grassy courtyards inside. We saw a Nepali wedding procession and a child's birthday party on the grounds while we were there.
Rooms. Spacious and attractive. Some with balconies. Comfortable medium firm beds. Note that most buildings in Nepal do not have central heating. The hotel provides an electric radiator, so we toasted up the room before going to bed to take the January chill off. Warm wool covers.
Service. Fantastic. We booked directly via email / Whats App. The manager contacted me ahead of time via Whats App to see if I needed anything. Will arrange for a car for airport pick up and drop off (about $15 US each way). Our driver, Pushpa, was wonderful so we just took his number and Whats App'd him if we needed anything (like transportation to neighboring Patan and Bhaktapur). Also arranged for our overnight to Nargarkot Farmhouse (see other review) and a full day guide and transport back from Nargarkot to Changu Narayan Temple, Buddha Stupa and Pashupatinath.
Amenities. Restaurant open for all meals. (Note: meals are inexpensive by US standards so I didn't mind paying for breakfast which I usually hate to do.) We actually ate many of our meals here because it was warm and cozy and tasty. Nice rooftop (with bar in season). Laundry service available.
Location: An 18-20 minute walk across the river to the southeast to Durbur Square or to the north east to Thamel and about an 18-20 minute walk up the hill to Swayambhunath. We loved the location because we like walking through the city - that was part of what we wanted our visit to be. However, on the night we were too tired to walk home, we hailed a cab for $3-5. The cabs don't use a meter. Ask them the fare and decide whether you want to pay it or offer the more likely rate of about half.
