Clean and pleasant room with AC. Lovely breakfast. Kind and helpful staff. Would definitely stay here again!

Horror experience hotel of the Valk Hoogkerk.
We booked a luxury room well in advance. Arriving at van der Valk Hoogkerk we were assigned a room at the back of the staff corridor. The staff slammed doors all evening so we couldn't sleep. The night porter said he had no other room available. It's either this or cycling, he said quite literally. The bed is lousy the night porter indicates that this noise by the staff starts again early in the morning. This hotel is the worst hotel I've ever slept in.

Value for money is far below par
Unfortunately a very disappointing experience. After the soup we indicated to the waiter that we were going to smoke outside before the main course came. When we returned, our two full glasses, the clean cutlery and our table were gone. There were other guests by now. We did get new drinks, but no excuses and had to sit at another table.
This was followed by the main course. I ordered the small portion of pork tenderloin (€21.50, only €2 cheaper than the normal portion of €23.50), but got one small piece of meat estimated to be well under 100 grams (see photo). According to the manager, this was a “senior portion”, while that is not mentioned anywhere on the menu. When asked how a difference of just €2 justifies such a large difference in portion, we did not get a clear answer.
After the main course, no one came by for more than half an hour to ask if everything was satisfactory or if we wanted another dessert. Eventually we walked to the checkout and cancelled the cheese board we ordered earlier.
We regularly visit various Van der Valk locations, but in terms of service, communication and value for money, this was by far the most disappointing experience.
We have been to various Van der Valks in the country, but never so bad regarding meal and service.
As a guest, you feel screwed because you are not taken seriously, but you can tick off more than € 70 for a particularly bad service. Hoogkerk never again.

Traded Room Cleaning for 20€ Drinks: The Worst Deal in Groningen! Rating: 2/5 ⭐️⭐️
Van der Valk Hotel Groningen actually has a lot going for it on paper. The rooms are nice and spacious, the breakfast is delicious and varied, and they have a great brand-new gym and a lovely pool ♂️️. We even rented their bikes and cycled all around Groningen, which was fantastic!
Unfortunately, the entire stay was completely ruined by one ridiculous experience... ♂️
The "Green Option" Trap:
The hotel offered us two free drinks if we opted out of room cleaning for a day. Sounded like a sweet deal! We agreed and simply asked for fresh towels instead.
Fast forward to our final evening: we sat down to enjoy our "free" drinks, only to be told that the voucher apparently didn't apply to "expensive" drinks—only basic soft drinks, wine, or beer .
After a long and frustrating argument, we ended up paying €20 for two drinks, while receiving zero room cleaning AND zero fresh towels ❌. Talk about a downgrade!
Verdict:
It was the absolute worst trade deal in hotel history. We felt completely tricked, and for that reason alone, we will never accept a deal like that again—and we won't be coming back to this hotel. 2 stars!

Good hotel from which you can easily visit Groningen
Hotel is nice and staff customer friendly. Nice room and great breakfast. Plenty of parking spaces also to recharge and next to the hotel a bus stop so you can also easily travel by public transport.
