Terrible experience

With good spirits I went to Middelburg for a weekend. Check-in was possible from 15:00 but unfortunately no one from the hotel was present. After a few laps of walking someone from the restaurant came running. This man did not actually know how the hotel worked and had to call the owner for help. Bit crazy, but okay. I got my key quickly and went to my room. A great room, nice bathroom and perfect location. Unfortunately without air conditioning and without a window that could open, it was much too hot. The next morning I wanted to have breakfast, but no one was present. Also I had not received a code from the key box, so I was locked out and could not enter the hotel.Fortunately 2 other guests came downstairs who gave me the code, because the owner was not accessible and there was no breakfast. At this moment another woman wanted to check out but this was not possible? The hotel was just closed at the moment? The next morning, young people sleeping in the hotel were locked out. 1 broke the window of the door and came in screaming. Dead scary! And even now the owner has not been reachable. I got my things together and left. This has been a terrible weekend. When checking out for the first time someone from the hotel spoken / seen. Came up with all kinds of excuses that I doubt are right. He offered me a free night's stay. After 2 contact from me to arrange this overnight stay and no response I am completely done with it. Absolutely don't go here, really isn't worth your money!

Arrogant owner

The female employee quickly indicated that there was a double booking for the room, but that we would get a free upgrade to a better room. After waiting in a red hot room we are offered drinks, the owner would come and he would arrange it further. He came in quite quickly and was quite direct and arrogant in his communication. We could get a family room if we paid 100 euros extra. While the fault was with their system... after 2 hours of calling Booking.com and being told several times that the fault was with the property, Booking.com also indicated that it could not get any further with the owner and also found him quite arrogant. Eventually Booking.com arranged another accommodation for us and reimbursed us. Despite the problem was at the property and not at Booking.com

€250 paid, but basic things not in order

To start off on a positive note: the staff was friendly.
We stayed at Hotel de Bij in Middelburg, a few months after the hotel was taken over by a new owner. Unfortunately, our experience was disappointing on almost all counts and was totally disproportionate to the price we paid.
On arrival we had to wait about 20 minutes because the key to our room was missing. Eventually it was found, but that immediately gave a messy and unprofessional impression. Moreover, our room turned out not to be in the hotel itself, but in a separate building about 100 meters away.
For one night including breakfast we paid €250. For that amount you can expect the basics to be in order. That was not the case. The room was not clean but downright dusty. There was so much fabric you could easily write your name in it. In addition, there were various DIY materials in the room, which made it seem as if the room was not yet ready for guests.
Also the amenities were not as advertised. The website states that the rooms have a TV. We were only able to find a remote control; a television was nowhere to be seen.
Another notable problem was the lighting. The light in the hallway to the room appeared to be linked to the light in the room itself. When the neighbors came home in the evening and turned on the hallway light, the light in our room also came on. Not exactly conducive to a good night's sleep.
Dinner in the restaurant was fine in terms of food, but the service and organization clearly left something to be desired. Everything took a very long time and it seemed as if the crowds became difficult as soon as more than five tables were occupied. We got the strong impression that there is little hospitality experience.
Breakfast was then well below standard. We ran out of coffee and tea. When this was later supplemented, the cups appeared to be gone. Eventually we drank coffee from a yogurt bowl. The offer consisted of some slices of white and brown bread, two more hard balls and two bowls of cold cuts and cheese that looked like they were being moved from fridge to breakfast table every morning. For a hotel in this price range, that is simply insufficient.
At check-out we discussed our complaints. We were helped by a friendly lady who, after hearing our story, contacted her boss. We were then told that €100 would be refunded from the account. Because we had paid in advance by credit card, this amount would be refunded.
That never happened.
After many phone calls in the following weeks we were told a different excuse each time. Several times the connection was even just lost. In the end, we gave up hope.
Friendly staff is fine, but that cannot compensate for a dirty room, poor organization, a substandard breakfast and failure to keep agreements made. For us, Hotel de Bij is completely finished and we absolutely cannot recommend it, especially considering the price of €250 per night.

1 night in a nice room

booked for 2 nights, but only 1 night can go due to a death; owner has solved this very nicely by offsetting our meal with that lost night.
nice room under the roof, not too hot, clean
very special breakfast, very tasty
communication in the week before our stay was very difficult, hotel was not accessible by phone or mail. gave me some stress.

We met by the proprietor of the hotel and his family on arrival who were all delightful and most helpful, in making us feel welcome, accompanying us to our room when we first arrived!
My relatively new partner and I were somewhat surprised to find an open toilet (separated by only a semi frosted glass screen) Neither of us thought this was acceptable in a hotel room, additionally, neither of us feel comfortable enough to use such an indiscreet toilet facility in what was ostensibly an extension of our bedroom and sleeping quarters. We felt uncomfortable to complain as the owners were so pleasant and were obviously proud of their establishment and our room!
There was an additional €25 charge for the dog, having searched your app for pet friendly hotels in Middelburg, which we did not mind paying but had no knowledge of this additional payment when we booked on your site!
It was not until late in the evening we found the TV was damaged and consequently an annoyance to watch! Bedside light switches did not work meaning lights could not be extinguished from the comfort of the bed, a must nowadays, I’m sure you’ll agree!
