A very sad, no charming hotel I rather would have been without.
No real effort anywhere to make it comfortable for the guests.

One night was enough – I would not stay here again.

Unfortunately, my experience at Bastion Hotel Nijmegen was extremely disappointing, and I cannot recommend this hotel.
The problems started at check-in. Because I booked the room directly at the hotel, I was informed that a €150 security deposit was required. I had absolutely no problem with this and agreed to the terms.
However, only after I had paid for the room, breakfast and the deposit was I told that the €150 deposit from my stay on 6 August would not even be released until 10 August. I was also told that after the hotel releases it, it could take approximately another two working days for the money to reach my card.
In other words, €150 can remain unavailable to me for around a week, despite the fact that I stayed at this hotel for only ONE night while travelling through the Netherlands.
I find this completely unreasonable for a one-night stay.
The second, and much more unpleasant, experience happened at breakfast.
I am a sales manager and came to the Netherlands for work, travelling between different shops and business meetings. Time in the morning is extremely important to me. This is exactly why I normally pay for breakfast at hotels — so that I can eat quickly and continue my working day without wasting time searching for somewhere else to have breakfast.
The breakfast here was very poor.
There were not even basic prepared eggs or an omelette available. If you wanted an omelette, you had to wait in a queue with several other guests while one member of staff prepared them individually.
After breakfast, my colleague took four bananas — two for each of us — as we had a long working day ahead and the breakfast itself had been quite limited.
Apparently, the hotel has a rule that guests may take only one banana per person.
I have absolutely no problem with this rule.
If a member of staff had simply said, “Sorry, it is one banana per person,” we would have immediately returned the extra bananas and there would have been no issue whatsoever.
Instead, a member of staff loudly called out to my colleague in front of many other guests, making the whole situation unnecessarily embarrassing and making us feel as though we were being publicly accused of stealing something.
Afterwards, members of staff continued talking and joking between themselves in Dutch, which we could not understand, and we were then told that if we wanted more bananas, we should go and buy them at a supermarket.
I consider this an extremely unprofessional and disrespectful way to speak to paying hotel guests.
There is a huge difference between politely explaining a hotel rule and publicly embarrassing your guests over a couple of bananas.
Finally, even my first impression of the room itself was poor. As soon as I opened the door, there was a very strong unpleasant smell. The room smelled either as though it had not been properly aired for a long time or as though someone had smoked there in the past.
So overall: an unreasonable deposit policy, a very disappointing breakfast, an unpleasant room smell, and — most importantly — completely unacceptable customer service.
One star.
After this experience, I definitely would not stay at Bastion Hotel Nijmegen again, and I cannot recommend it to others.

Unfortunately disappointing

Pros: It was very clean, you slept well in the room to the back.
The rest was unfortunately worse than expected, the price-performance ratio was not right. It was not pointed out on arrival that you have to request room service. Of course, we assumed the price we paid. So we had no clean towels in the evening after a long day of sightseeing. We had to use ours as a doormat in the bathroom, there were none with a walk-in shower.
A particular disappointment was the breakfast. Although there is a selection of sausage and cheese, only half of the cheese was completely dried and corrugated. He looked like the day before (at least). The croissants had landed out of the bag without baking them on the buffet. The most annoying thing was that on both days the scrambled eggs "ran out", the hard-boiled eggs from the heat container were cold. That can happen, two days in a row it makes a different impression. Fruit salad was also only available until a certain point, we still saw the bowls of other guests who came earlier. For us, and other late risers, there were still remnants of apple and grape. (One hour before the end of breakfast time) The coffee was good, which is not enough for the price.

Bad breakfast

Very bad breakfast this is from 7:00 to 9:00 but 8:00 is all as good as on! And the quality is very underwhelming...hard edges on the slices of cheese dried out sausage, drying rolls etc. We will skip this hotel in future!

Get out with squeaky tapes

Location is not exactly inspiring, but of secondary importance to me. Room neat, spacious, clean, very spacious bathroom, good beds. Covered parking on site also fine. Service restaurant/bar far below par. Had to be in English, but yes, if you still don't know what gin is then it gets difficult. In the morning when I checked out I wanted to pay for dinner, but that was already done. "You have pinned sir." After a lot of hassle, it finally surfaced that it had been charged to my credit card without my permission or knowledge. The same day I invoked my right to be forgotten, because the latter became too grumpy for me.
