Not what I expected

The hotel is over 10 years old but I expected a certain standard which they did not meet. The location is good. Car park is small. The restaurant is too small for a 176 room hotel. Probably it wasn’t thought of when the hotel was being expanded to 176 rooms. Getting to some rooms can be difficult because of the maze of a construction in there. A lot of TV channels in my room were not working. My sink was movable for some weird reason. I guess that’s not the norm. Breakfast can be good but generally is just average

The Worlds Worse Hotel

Apologises in advance for the size of this review but it is impossible to show the levels of incompetency and poor facilities this hotel has in just a few words!!!! Stayed here to a week so far and a few days left on stay! Due to company security rules we very limited in what hotels can use hence stuck here!!
Starting with the staff, lying and rudeness seems to be the watchword for the majority. The words “please” and “thank you” are not a part of their vocabulary and when things are wrong, getting a “sorry” needs to be dragged from their lips!!! Most show breath taking incompetency, from a chef who cannot follow the room service menu to provide food as ostated to the reception staff who can take up to an hour to deal with the simplest of things. If they don’t want to deal with something, lying is their go to default setting. Example, request to change a room needed a manager to agree but told not one on duty at that moment (which later found was a lie)! Management insist they have an in-depth training program to improve staff but they beyond help. Best get rid and get people who want to work!
The food is at best describable as very average. Breakfast is many empty or cold trays of food served in the most unpleasant of rooms! Drab is not the word! Room service takes at least an hour for most things which only can be obtained after a battle with the call taker! A menu lists what is in each dish but what arrives is quite random. If it says a dish is made with boneless breast of chicken, why do you get bones which are clearly thigh bones? If says a dish is served on a baguette, why does it then come served on sweet toasted bread? Just two examples but be assured in a week so far here, no meal has been served which matches the menu. Sadly little other choice nearby so stuck with this poor choice!
Facilities in the hotel are tatty and pretty much useless. Shower dribbles out the head which makes a proper shower impossible. Door lock doesn’t work so cannot properly secure once in! The room has an emergency light right opposite the bed which emits a constant green light so you can never get a dark room to sleep in. If power cuts off then a bright white light comes on. No problem in the day but being awoken by a light coming on so bright at 3am is so annoying! Air con is right next to bed meaning the choice is you so cold as you sleep or boiling hot! I tried the hot option one night but found this means the insects that prowl the room are more active so woke up bitten from head to toe!
Wi-fi is very very slow although they have just installed a mast so maybe will improve. I luckily had a colleague staying and her Wi-fi dongle in range of my room so could link to that! They say the internet on 2nd floor stronger than 3rd floor (where I was most of stay) so I moved to that floor to one night. The beds on that floor were as hard as rock! Literally, the tiled floor would have been more comfortable! The third floor had softer beds so asked if a mattress could be moved from that floor to second so could have Internet and a reasonable bed! Was told that couldn’t happen as have to ask a manager and not one on duty!!!!!!!!
Tried to get coffee from the pool bar and waited 5 minutes but no staff near. As walked in could see 5 staff chatting in reception!!!
Today charade is the power being switched off for repairs. At 0750 on a Sunday morning (only day off so delighted to be woken early) informed the “lights” would be going off at 12! Why wake people so early to tell them about something happening in 4 hours!!!! At 12 the “lights” do indeed go off but by “lights” they mean all power so no electrics!! Wait 45 minutes and still nothing. Go to reception to find out when it may return to be told it will be done in 2 hours, only then for another member to increase this to three hours! No offers of any compensation for the problem and very half hearted apologies which in reality sounded very much like “we don’t care!”
Hotel has zero idea of customer service....zero prospects of improving....I hope, zero trade very soon!
The only redeeming feature was a laundry guy called Johnson. Impeccable manners, polite, accurate information and kept to his promise! In short, the only hope is Johnson becomes the manager!!!!!

Average

Stayed a night at the hotel and I will say it was just an average experience for me.
It is a fairly large hotel by Kaduna standards with a large compound area though very little is green.
Rooms are fairly sized and beds comfortable but I struggled to get hot water in the bathroom and then I was amazed that I had to use a bucket and bowl to have a bath rather than a shower. It seemed so pre-historic. First time I have experienced that in decades.
Meals were slightly above average and lots of options were presented.
Overall it was an average experience.

Asaa I say.

This is a surprisingly huge hotel with a lot of stairs, no alcohol, and the hardest beds you've ever felt. Rooms are generally clean. Showers mostly work. Overall a reasonable experience. Very good for the region, though.
