Gem of a place hidden in the forests close to Castell Branco
The village is very secluded and isolated and there are a series of walks in and around the accommodation with a river running through the base of the village.
Xisto also provides a very unexpected and wonderful swimming pool!! It was hard to believe this facility had been created in the surrounds when you first arrive.
We made a call and in no time, we were being shown into our unit. From the outside, you would never expect such an interior – it provided all the comforts you could ever need, very well executed and considerate of the environment it was in.
There is no taverna in the village but Gustavo provides a shared area by his wood fired bread oven where you can light a fire and cook outside. We had a kitchen as well, sadly, we hadn’t stopped en-route to purchase some food for supper!! We’d certainly recommend making sure you bring something to eat with you.
We did have some wine and snacks, so surviving until Gustavo’s breakfast was never going to be a big challenge.
Gustavo was such a wonderful host at breakfast. We get the impression he is very well accomplished in and around the kitchen – we were offered home made bread, jams and preserves. It also appears Gustavo tries to keep it local and fresh which we loved.
We were sad, we only had the 1 x night and too many other spots to get to during our trip. It would be nice to arrive with more provisions, take some of the forest walks and become more in touch with the serenity on offer.

One of the Expectations
To finish, a pretty basic, repetitive breakfast, accompanied by lemonade (which I found inappropriate) and the same dried toast every day (5), to fill with a few insignificant slices of cheese and ham and 3 miserable packets of butter. We were occasionally gratified with some pieces of watermelon in a small bowl. Everything seemed senseless and told.
It was worth the sympathy of the 3 ladies who welcomed us, and in part we felt a little abandoned by D. Fernanda, after we complained about the problems in the room with the noise and ants. He had a rather displicent approach to the situation, without trying to give any kind of solution or even wanting to realize why we complained. We are on vacation, we want to rest in our time, without worries.
Otherwise surrounding area very funny, with the houses in Xisto, very typical. Very hot in the middle of August but the room was cool and there were shadows on the street. Friendly pool. The little river nearby was half full, but still provided some funny 'adventures' to explore the space, in nature. Restaurant was closed.

A dream, hidden gem, lovely welcome from hosts
The breakfast place is great.
People are very kind and you can see they really live for it.
The wooden stove food must be great but unfortunately it is marinated for a long time so 2 hours notice is not enough.
The place was settled 250 years ago by a large family and the village gradually grew from there.
Birds, frogs and cockerels make for a lively dawn, as the owner says they work for free...
