An excellent, modern and functional place!

Casas da Comedia is a very modern and functional apartment hotel. The rooms are furnished with new and efficient furniture, and the kitchen even has a personal washing machine! The room we were in was not too big, but included everything we needed, and so did the bathroom. A generous welcome pack of wine and some food was provided by Carolina, and it was lovely! The hotel's location is excellent, in the heart of the historic part of Coimbra, close to all the interesting sites.
Very important: Remember to update when you arrive, so someone will wait for you at the entrance (we forgot and had to wait about 10 minutes…).

The good and the not-so-good

The good things:
Very clean; secure; located in a good area, in old town, but close to modern commercial area; the host allowed us to check in a few hours early, which we appreciated.
The not-so-good things while we there:
Host advised us on arrival of a toilet problem in main floor bathroom, which she said had been fixed. The fix failed that same evening. Flushing lever issue. When advised the following morning, the host promised a fix, but the lever failed again later the second day too. Two nights of toilet inoperability. Things do fail, but they shouldn’t fail twice over two sequential days, both after ‘fixes’.
Wifi was intermittently working. Phone call to host elicited the comment that the apartment modem-wifi devices were “pretty old”. Connections would work for short periods and then drop. Frustrating ‘off-on-again (after reloading)’ connection.
Instructions for using a heater mounted on the wall should have been available in written form. Verbal instructions from host were too involved to make the heater work. In consequence, the loft was unheated on a pretty cold night.

Central location, with great hosts and a generous welcome pack of food and wine.

On the positive side, the apartment was centrally located in the old part of town, with numerous restaurants and the main tourist attractions within walking distance. Carolina and Rita were both very helpful, with Rita meeting us on site and finding a rare parking space for us to use - explaining also which ones were available and which were for residents. The apartment was small, but included a kitchenette with all necessary facilities plus a washing machine. A generous and very tasty welcome pack of food and wine was provided. Use of security codes avoided any need to return keys at the end of our stay.
On the negative side, a cobble stoned roadway and one flight of steep stairs means the apartment is not ideal for those with a walking disability (or heavy luggage!). The apartment has heating but does not have air conditioning. It did not affect us as the weather was mild, but it would be hot in summer. Unfortunately, as we stayed during student celebration week, it was very noisy, with yelling from the street until 3am. This only affects particular weeks, and our hosts warned us in advance.

Espectacular estancia

Eccellente
