Great introduction to a place I’d love to return for a longer stay.

This is a gem of an eco hotel experience that we were introduced to through Acacia Tours based in Lisbon. It was the overnight aspect of a two day excursion from Lagos back up to Lisbon. Gorgeous setting, fabulous rooms, and definitely a place I’d return first a few days of R&R as there were ample sitting spaces, a gorgeous pool, horseback riding…. None of which we had time for on this particular tour. But I’d return to experience this. I did also have a glorious massage before my departure — Carla was amazing!!!! Couldn’t more highly recommend.

A stay that we decided to end earlier

A stay that ended early on by the way we were treated.
We had booked three nights in Herdade da Matinha with our daughters of 5 years and 1 year and a half.
During our stay we observed that families with babies were placed in the innermost room of the restaurant. On the first night, when our 1 1/2 year old daughter made the perfectly normal noise of a child of this age, they closed the door that separated our room from the rest of the dining area.
The next day, at breakfast, we asked to stay in the main room and they told us that there were no tables, although there were several empty tables. Only after we insisted again at dinner were we told that that area was “adult only”. A restriction that has never been communicated to us and which we consider especially serious in a hotel that presents itself as familiar.
But the most shocking thing happened when we questioned this policy and said we felt discriminated as a family with a small child. The employee we were talking to — and who we later realized was one of the managers/owners — let us talk alone, told me that I was “possessed” and that if the situation bothered me, “the problem was mine.”
We felt so distracted and uncomfortable with the attitude of someone who represented the hotel’s own management that we decided not to dine there that night. And even though we still had one more night booked, the next morning we packed and left. It made no sense to stay in a hotel where, as guests, we had just been treated this way.
This is accompanied by obvious maintenance and hygiene problems: broken loungers, waste of animals scattered across the space and horses defecating near the pool.
We liked rural environments and the presence of animals — that was also what attracted us in Matinha. But we expected another level of care, hygiene and, above all, a hospitality truly compatible with a hotel that presents itself as family.
Having an “adults only” policy in certain areas is a legitimate option — provided it is clear and transparent. Presenting ourselves as a family hotel, not informing the families in advance of this restriction and then treating those who question it in this way is, for us, completely unacceptable.
We do not recommend.

Limited hot water

I was looking forward to a hot shower at the end of a sweaty day. No hot water available. Apparently everyone cleaning up before dinner tends to run the tank dry. We’re told no hot water for a “couple of hours”. I suppose that’s if no one uses it in the interim. They could have told us at check in. No solution other than wait or take a freezing cold shower.

Magical and Relaxing

A magical, quiet and relaxing place with great service and food. After two days of biking, we stopped here for two nights to relax and take a day off from biking. It was just what we needed. Seriously away from the beaten path. The beautiful coastline of Portugal and a perfect beach is about a 2.5 mile hike from the hotel and well worth it.

A Slice of Heaven in Portugal

Our stay at Herdade de Matinha was the highlight of our trip! We loved the peaceful setting, the commitment to sustainability, the cozy atmosphere, and delicious food. The rooms are clean and comfortable, full of art created by the owner of the establishment. The whole place is awash with his amazing pieces. There are hiking trails nearby and 3 pools. Hop in your car and gazillions of beaches are not far away. If we go back to Portugal, we will skip everything else and just stay here again!
