Fantastic place to stay

We loved it here -- beautiful surroundings with quince trees, a grape arbor, old, thick walled Alentejo-styled houses, comfortably done to high standards. Our host, Graca was amazing -- we had no car and she happily drove us to dinner, to the start of our day's hiking, and more. We became friends, and because of her openness and generosity, learned much about current Portuguese life. This area of Portugal is lovely, with cork and olive farms, sheep in the meadows, and not far off, the wild Atlantic coast. This is rural accommodation -- dirt roads off dirt roads, so it's better to have a car.

Be advised about access problems and initial deposit

Disclaimer: this is a review of how the deposit is handled by the owner and problematic access to "Casas de Cerca". It is not a review about the property itself.
- First of all, be advised that the owner will demand an advance deposit of the 50% of the cost of the stay and there is no cancellations or refund policy, which means you will never recover it.
- Do not try to reach to the property if you don't have a 4x4. The owner will provide you with maps that look ok at first but are insufficient once you find yourself in a maze of mountain roads.
- The property owner will insist 4x4 are not necessary but remember that if you have an incident with your (rented) car on a mountain road, no insurance company will cover it.
- There is no telephone signal in the area so contacting the owner, as she suggests, to be guided to the property is pretty difficult. You will need to try a land line in one of the bars of the village.
- Do not expect to find signals that indicate the directions to the property. There aren't any. The owner wants to keep the house's secret as part of their charm. Based on our experience, she achieves this pretty well.
Due to the above circumstances we went through some very unpleasant situations and were not able to find the property. The distress caused made us not to try to go back again. If you dig in social media, you will find people in similar circumstances ours.

Tudo é pensado ao pormenor para usufruir da natureza local. A excelente arquitetura inspirada em taipa, uma decoração confortável e um acolhimento excepcional. O local é paradisíaco e pode-se desfrutar dos sons, cheiros e vistas locais.

Fraude

Reservei duas noites no estúdio (casa do Tanque) das Casas da Cerca, pagando 90 euros por noite antes do check in. Fiz o check in e, quando comecei a pousar as malas, dei conta que a cama estava cheia de formigas, algumas mortas e outras vivas, e dejetos de insetos. As paredes e cortinados estavam também sujos com formigas mortas e dejetos. Contactando a proprietária, esta respondeu que era normal pois a casa localiza-se no campo. Além desta situação, autorizam animais de estimação na estadia mas depois a proprietária alimenta uma série de gatos vadios, sem identificação, sem vacinas, à porta dos alojamentos, promovendo o crescimento de colónias de gatos e a propagação de doenças.

paz e encontro com a natureza

Gostámos muito dos seis dias passados na mais pequena destas três acolhedoras casinhas, num vale de troviscais, com ligação a pé ao rio Mira. Estivemos na Casa do Tanque. Apesar de pequeno, o espaço, esteticamente bem concebido, é naturalmente acolhedor e oferece as condições essenciais para a estadia. Graça, a proprietária, acolheu-nos de forma simples e afável, disponível na resposta a pedidos e dúvidas. Atenta, porém discreta e educada, mimou-nos em cada dia desde a manhã com os bons produtos da terra.
A vegetação abundante e clima temperado do vale proporcionam belas caminhadas pelos trilhos entre ruínas e antigos arrozais até ao rio. A água fresca tratada do tanque ou quente do duche exterior proporcionam um bem estar inigualável em pleno verão alentejano. Saber habitar este ambiente natural, é a única condição para o descanso que nos proporciona. A opção pelo sossego e comunhão com a natureza, sempre mais difíceis e almejados, não se compadece com exigências de mordomia hoteleira.
Já trazemos saudades do cheiro das estevas, das estrelas na escuridão da noite e do silêncio, só interrompido pelo coaxar das rãs!
Voltaremos, decerto.
