Outstanding place with excellent food

I had a fabulous stay at The Old Border with my friends. We had two rooms but we saw each others on the balcony where we could admire every morning the sunrise. The room was outstanding, cleaned and I had all the conditions to spend some days off-work. The hosts are welcoming people, friendly and always smiling to the guests, I would like also to highlight the delicious menu of varied sorts of fish dishes and desserts made by Mariana and Grieg. I will definitely come back with my two teenagers.

Extremely Disrespectful Treatment – A Disappointing Experience

Our stay at this property was a profoundly negative experience, and we feel obligated to warn other travelers. What stood out the most — beyond anything in the facilities — was the shocking lack of hospitality and the hostile, arrogant behavior of the owners.
The incident that defined our stay involved a friend who briefly came to visit us. He was in the common area only, not inside our room. However, without any civil discussion, the owners immediately confronted and forcefully expelled him from the property, in a tone that was not only unprofessional but outright aggressive and disrespectful. There was no attempt at a conversation, no courtesy, just confrontation and humiliation. We provided proof of this booking but they would not even look. We offered to give also ID besides proof of booking but still no…
We had reviewed the house rules and followed them. These rules state that outside persons are not allowed in the “housing unit,” but nowhere is it clearly defined what “housing unit” refers to. Common sense suggests this means the private guest room — not shared common spaces such as the terrace, lounge, or outdoor areas. If the intent was to ban visitors from the entire property, this should have been communicated clearly and respectfully — not enforced through hostility.
When we tried to clarify the situation, the owners were completely dismissive and treated us as if we were causing problems, instead of acknowledging the ambiguity in their own rules. Their behavior reflected an attitude that guests are to be corrected or controlled, not welcomed.
What’s more disturbing is that this behavior is not isolated. After our stay, we read other negative reviews — and found a clear pattern: the owners respond to criticism with sarcasm, personal attacks, and total denial of wrongdoing. There is no trace of self-reflection or accountability. They treat every critical review as an attack rather than an opportunity to improve. This kind of defensiveness and entitlement has no place in the hospitality business.
Beyond this, the facilities were subpar. The bathroom was especially problematic — the shower caused water to flood the entire floor, making basic use uncomfortable and even unsafe. For the price and promises made, the quality did not meet even modest expectations.
In summary:
• The house rules are unclear and inconsistently enforced.
• The owners are rude, confrontational, and incapable of handling situations professionally.
• The facilities are poorly maintained and not worth the cost.
• Critical feedback is met with aggression, not responsibility.
Unless you are willing to walk on eggshells and accept being treated with disdain, we strongly advise against booking this property. There are plenty of places that understand what hospitality truly means. This is not one of them.

Wonderful holidays!

It is the place where we will definitely return!
Perfect for a quiet and good quality holiday, with or without family.
The host (Grig and Mariana) is warm and offers you some delicious menus, prepared by Grig himself, who is a skilled cook!
There is a friendly and nice environment...
Thank you, The Old Border, for the wonderful holidays! See you soon…

Amazing place to stay

We had a wonderful stay at this hotel in Vama Veche, located in a quiet area just a few steps away from the beach. The atmosphere is perfect for those looking to relax, away from the hustle and bustle of the town center. The rooms are clean, comfortable, and tastefully decorated, offering everything you need for a pleasant vacation.
What I liked most was the friendliness of the staff, always smiling and ready to help with anything you might need. They really made us feel welcome! I highly recommend this place to anyone looking for an authentic experience in Vama Veche, but in a more peaceful and relaxing setting. We will definitely come back!

Beautiful, clean, good food

It is not a location for the pretentious, but if you want the minimum comfort, nice people and a number of "extra" facilities (air conditioning, TV, hair dryer and reading lamp, summer kitchen equipped with everything you absolutely need), it is right place. Some may consider the price a bit high, but relative to the "market" and what it offers, it's about there.
What we liked:
- Mariana, Grig and Ala;
- flexibility and common sense;
- AC and mini fridge in the room;
- cleanliness and the fact that towels are changed every 3 days;
-the lavanda and the very nice lawn
- morning coffee, tea and apples provided by the house;
- the food cooked by Grig (who has a Chef certificate) and its price
- the discount from the Aproape Bar, which I didn't take advantage of because I didn't pay attention to the welcome message;
- 3-5 minutes walk to the beach,
- the music from the kitchen terrace
What we didn't like:
- shower curtain and shower location in the bathroom (bad decision, in the process of being fixed);
- the wifi didn't work at all
- "view" on the sea is not really "view", although if you are lucky you can see the sun right after it has risen.
- the minibar prices changed during the stay (we caught the transition from off-season to season).
PS the pics on th site are better that the ones I've made
