My advice to anyone wishing to book the Rondawel, is to ensure that the Main House is not booked as well.
Die Rondawel – Booking Advice to Avoid Major Disappointment
I booked Die Rondawel for the New Year’s week – 28 December 2025 to 3 January 2026, looking forward to the peace and tranquility on the farm, not to mention the breathtaking scenery and views. That was not to be.
I arrived Sunday the 28th after Wanita, the friendly booking agent, kindly allowed me to book in before 14:00. On arrival, Mariska, the main contact and owner of the farm, welcomed me and informed me that the lapa and other facilities which is a stone’s throw from the Rondawel, was being used by friends of hers, and I was welcome to join them should I wish to do so. It seemed to be a major gathering of a great number of locals, and at the time of my arrival it was already a pretty jolly event in the lapa. I declined Mariska’s offer to join in as I am a single traveller, and did not know anyone but Mariska in the sizable crowd. I simply wished to settle in to the really beautiful Rondawel which was perfect for the planned week’s stay.
I decided to unload my baggage and then head into Fouriesburg to top up on supplies for the week, hoping that on my return later the party atmosphere in the lapa would have settled in order for me to sit on the verandah of the Rondawel and enjoy the view of the mountains opposite. On my return around 17:00 the party in the lapa had moved up quite a few notches as the fires were almost ready for the braai. No chance for me to enjoy the peace and tranquility of the farm as the conversations and music got louder as time went by, accompanied by loud music from one of the many vehicles parked around the lapa and on the terrain, as the afternoon and evening progressed. This continued to well after 21:00 that evening, after which all Mariska’s visitors eventually dispersed.
I checked bookings in the mean time for the Main House and noticed that it was also booked for the week. Based on what I experienced at that point, I decided to rather abort my plans and booking for the week as I expected the occupants of the Main House not behaving much differently to the crowd that specific evening. I informed Wanita that I was heading back home early the next morning – Monday - as I did not see my way open to deal with the same behaviour as the previous night for the remainder of the week. Wanita responded via Whatsapp as follows:
2025/12/29, 06:36 - Mariska Exley (Wanita): More Pieter. Ek is so jammer oor dit.
Stuur asb jou bank besondereede vir my
Wanita also offer me alternative accommodation elsewhere which I declined. At that time I was already well on my way back to Gauteng.
I afterwards recommended to Wanita that the Rondawel and Main House in future be booked out as a unit, and not separately as the occupants of the Rondawel would not be able to enjoy the peace they envisioned, especially in view of the lapa being right next to the Main House, and only a few meters away from the Rondawel and most likely to be used by the occupants of the Main House.
To date I have not received the refund for the remainder of the week which Wanita kindly offered.
