Bad Experience
We chose the breakfast buffet based on several recommendations, and the food was genuinely delicious. However, the service was disappointing, with a lack of proper cutlery, slow service, and staff who appeared to need better training and coordination.
Special appreciation to the hardworking lady at the hopper and omelette station, Kethis at the bar service, and the helpful front office staff. They were the highlights of our experience.
I also had the opportunity to speak with the Resident Manager, who mentioned that he is new to the property and is working towards improvements. I sincerely hope to see positive changes in the future.
Overall, the hotel has a convenient location near the railway station, but significant improvements are needed in cleanliness, housekeeping, staff training, discipline, and service standards. A disappointing experience overall.

Bad Experience
We arrived early at around 5:30 a.m. The security officer was courteous and guided us upon arrival. However, the night receptionist was asleep on the sofa and initially seemed unaware of our reservation. After spending about five minutes searching, he finally located our booking. Since we had arrived early, we informed him that we would head out and return later for check-in, but requested a room where we could freshen up and change our clothes.
He then took us to a nearby property, Valampuri Hotel, where a staff member kindly agreed to accommodate our request. However, the room had a very unpleasant smell. We accepted it temporarily, changed our clothes, left our luggage, and assumed we would later be checked into the rooms we had booked through Agoda.
To our surprise, when we returned, we were informed that the room we had used was actually one of the rooms we had booked and paid for. This came as a complete shock because it looked nothing like the rooms advertised on Agoda. The difference between the advertised rooms and the actual room provided was significant, making us feel that the listing was misleading.
When we raised our concerns, the receptionist, Brindika, acknowledged that the unpleasant smell was due to the room being located near a pit. What disappointed us most was her attitude. Instead of empathizing with our concerns, she stated that it was not the hotel’s fault and implied that it was our fault for making the booking. Her approach lacked professionalism and the basic guest care expected in the hospitality industry.
Thankfully, Nilaini stepped in and completely changed the situation. She listened patiently to our concerns, acknowledged the issue, sincerely apologized for the unpleasant smell, and spoke with the management. She then showed us alternative rooms at Valampuri Hotel, which we found acceptable, and we happily stayed there for the remainder of our two night stay. This is exactly how guest complaints should be handled.
The breakfast at Valampuri Restaurant was enjoyable, and the crab curry we had for dinner deserves a special mention. It was absolutely delicious.
Unfortunately, there was another disappointing incident on our departure day (29 June). We had checked out of two rooms while paying for a late checkout for the third room (412). At around 5:40pm, a housekeeping staff member rang the bell once and attempted to enter the room almost immediately without waiting even a few seconds for a response. This was unacceptable and showed a lack of respect for guest privacy.
Throughout our stay, only three individuals truly demonstrated genuine hospitality:
* Nilaini, whose professionalism, patience, and problem-solving skills completely turned our experience around.
* A bald gentleman wearing a grey shirt whom we met during breakfast. He was assisting the restaurant team, spoke excellent English, and displayed exceptional guest service. His professionalism stood out immediately.
* A short bellboy who helped us during the room transfer. He was polite, efficient, and always willing to assist.
As a Les Clefs d’Or member working in a five-star hotel in Sri Lanka, I understand the standards expected in hospitality. While every hotel can face operational challenges, the way those challenges are handled defines the guest experience. Sadly, because of the misleading room presentation and the poor attitude displayed by Brindika, I cannot recommend Green Grass Hotel.
On the other hand, Nilaini deserves recognition and consideration for a higher position. She demonstrated exactly what hospitality is all about listening, empathizing, taking ownership, and finding a solution. Likewise, the gentleman in the grey shirt has the leadership qualities and guest-focused attitude that any hotel would benefit from. Staff like them are the reason guests return.

The lunch and dinner were not satisfactory in terms of quality and variety. Breakfast was comparatively better, but it would be appreciated if at least one or two additional varieties could be included in the menu.
Improving these areas would greatly enhance the overall experience.
