There were several issues that caused concern:
Accessibility and health and safety were high on the list. The hotel is located at the end of an extremely windy, narrow lane. The steep climb up this road by taxi to the hotel took approximately 10 mins. It was a hairy experience during the day; we certainly did not want to have to do that journey in the dark, up and down this unlit lane.
Problems with accessibility did not end there. Entry into the hotel grounds was up a long flight of steps and then across a rough, steep walkway. More steps into the building itself gave entry to a small reception area. The sweep of the grand, bifurcated staircase in this area was designed to impress; unfortunately, all it did was cause dismay, especially after the climb into the hotel. There are no lifts in the building. I have arthritis, have had knee surgery recently and scheduled for another op’ very shortly. So, this was disconcerting to say the least.
There was yet another flight of stairs to negotiate to get to our rooms. I was alarmed to find that the banister/handrail was very wobbly. (I rely heavily on this when going up and down stairs)
The fourposter bed with mosquito net was a romantic touch. The room itslef was very clean. The view from the balcony was quite spectacular but really not worth the hassle of getting to the hotel. The bathroom was quite basic. There was no shower stall just a very shallow step down, cordoned off with a narrow curtain. The finish around the sink, toilet and cupboard was shoddy. There was a distinct smell of drains in the bathroom.
One of the reasons we had chosen the Ceylon Breeze was because on its website it claims to have a gym. It does not. When we showed a member of staff the photo’ and write up on their website, he went to consult his manager. He returned a few minutes later and rather sheepishly said that there was no gym and that it was mistake on the website. This is false advertising.
The food at the hotel left an awful lot to be desired. The toasted sandwiches were cold. The fresh lime sodas were flat and warm. The hot, buttered cuttlefish was chewy and stone cold. The dhal too was cold. The fried chicken looked nothing like the photo’ on the menu; what we were served was actually devilled chicken. Once more, it was cold and chewy. We sent it all back. Breakfast was pretty much of the same quality.
In the reviews we had read prior to booking, nothing significant was flagged up about the access road to the hotel or indeed the climb into the building itself.
On a personal note, I found the atmosphere in the hotel, creepy. This may have been due to the fact that apart from another couple, we were the only other people there. I felt extremely isolated. My husband found the place depressing.
Members of staff were all very polite and friendly. Sadly, this alone was insufficient reason for us to continue with our stay at the Ceylon Breeze.
