Like home away from home!

Shirani and Raja welcomed us like we were family or old friends. The house is beautiful as is the garden. Our 2yr old daughter loved running around the lawn and smelling the flowers! River Grove is some way outside of Kandy town, which is by no means a negative. The temple of the tooth is a must see, but othewise we preferred by far to relax and recover from our jetlag in the tranquil environment of River Grove rather than spend time in the town itself. Raja and Shirani suggested a visit to the botanical gardens, and we are glad we took their advice. The gardens are huge, and so beautiful. Our little girl enjoyed running around and playing with so many other kids who were there picnicking with their families.
We remember with fondness the long evenings, relaxing on the terrace with an ice cold beer and talking to Raja about everything under the sun while the smell of Shirani's cooking wafted out of the kitchen. And the food! Shirani would prepare a banquet every evening and every single dish was divine.
What made our stay extra special however was the fuss they made over our kid. They were so patient with her. Nothing was too much trouble for them, they cooked special food that wasn't too spicy just for her. They gave her biscuits, yogurt... even opened a box of chocolates especially for her to entice her into eating (she was being uncharacteristicly difficult the first night due to jetlag, but the chocolate certainly put a smile on her face!)
We were there in April (7 months ago already! Sorry I took so long to write this!) and our little one still loves the little dinasour soft toy that this lovely couple gave her.
Thank you Shirani and Raja for a warm welcome and perfect introduction to Sri Lanka.

Most Enjoyable and Memorable

We loved our evening with Shirani and Raja! The conversation was great fun. Politics, family, grandchildren....we loved it. And the food.....my goodness! So, so good. If you want to feel a real connection to the people of Sri Lanka, don't miss River Grove.
We will treasure the hand-made runner from Shirani. Beautiful!
Best regards to two most warm and loving hosts.

Lovely old couple's abode

The place is run by a lovely old couple with one man helping them. Tugged away a few hundred meters uphill from the river aerodrome, their house oozes a Victorian feel. It is a thirty-minute drive from Kandy city near the Ceylon Tobacco Factory leaf testing unit.
White walls and shiny red-oxide floors, spacious living area with a collection of antique trinkets carefully placed all over, juxtaposed with old photographs, the place is ready to tell a story!
Rooms are quaint overlooking a small garden patch visited by an elusive mongoose and many interesting birds. There are three rooms available for occupancy. Very neatly kept beds and bath. One room alone has an attached bath and a private garden. They have a very interesting library too!
The aged couple are resourceful to handle all challenges that they face. We had an eventful stay in which we lost a room key and had to pry open a sun-light to get our younger son to slip into the room. Kandy is now suffering acute water scarcity and the couple quickly worked out alternate solutions for supply of water. Even when they had misjudged the dates of stay and had extra guests on the same day, they went the extra mile by giving up their own bedroom to ensure that their guests did not face any difficulty. We were truly touched by this level of commitment.
Food is prepared at home and caters to a European palette. Vegans and vegetarians might want to consider catching dinner in the city. However, it was endearing to see them spoil our young sons like they would their own grandchildren.
It is ideal for guests who understand that things can go wrong at home and find practical solutions to deal with them without expecting the professionalism of a hotel, and young tourists who are looking for a place to crash at night and little parental love away from home.

We thank you for the review of your stay with us. We appreciate also your patience and tolerance of the minor changes you had to undergo. A complementary vegetarian dinner was served to show our sincere appreciation.
However we were surprised by the comment suggesting to our future guests to consider the option of having vegan or vegetarian meals in the city, when we were made to understand how enjoyable the vegetarian meal was that we provided.
However we welcome and appreciate suggestions and comments made by our guests.
Thank you.

Feeling Like Old Friends

We spent our first 2 nights in Sri Lanka with Shirani and Raja at their charming home tucked away in a quiet area of Kandy. It was like staying with dear friends who are wanting you to be comfortable and feel cared for - which we certainly did! Their home isn't new, but is gracious and charming. The overhead fan kept us cool at night and we appreciated having our own bathroom to use. Breakfasts and dinners were delicious, eating dinner together with our hosts and the other, most interesting guest was fun, informative and lasted well into the evening before we realized how late it had become.
Shirani has had her own business of creating hand-embroidered linens, and continues to produce exquisite works which she uses on her table and in the guest rooms. I enjoyed seeing some of the beautiful things she has made, and couldn't resist a table runner - using it will always remind me of the warm hospitality we so appreciated at River Grove!
