Very pretty view, breakfast included, and easy access to bathroom/showers.
My only complaint: There was only one charger outlet in the corner of the room (to share between the four of us). It was somewhat coming off of the wall. And the charger near the sink didn’t work for me.
But overall, wonderful stay! Would recommend.

The Good:
Great breakfast and view. Large rooms
The Bad:
poorly lit area between buildings.
Lots of stairs involved to access some rooms and reception.
Property "landscaping " was wild and unkempt. Lots of weeds. No fans and windows barely open. It lots of gravelas hot. Tiny bathroom sinks. Could not fill water bottle in the one near my room. One operational shower for females between 2 floors. No frosted window in shower area. You might flash a bicyclist or two! All rooms are mixed.
The Ugly:
I did not know the bus stopped running at 5 pm.The climb up is at a 45 degree angle. Half the path is steep uneven coarsely graveled steps. Unlit at night. Getting a bus or taxi ($20) is highly recommended.

Not bad

The location is not ideal, if you don’t catch the bus up to the hostel you have to walk up, but the view is absolutely beautiful. There is a small pathway straight up instead of the longer way, I recommend you don’t take that way unless you are extremely physically fit. Steep is the understatement, I had to take many breaks to catch my breath. The rooms are nice, there is only one charging outlet and it is by the sink which was annoying because you have to share it with a few other people. The rooms and the facilities were very clean. I liked that there were separate bathrooms and showers for sexes. Breakfast is included in your stay, very nice to have that in the morning when you have to get up early. It felt secluded which was good for the 3 days we stayed, but I wouldn’t want to stay there for a week.

If you value the security of your credit card data, do not book at Grindelwald Youth Hostel.

If you value the security of your credit card data and expect transparent, honest business practices, do not book at Grindelwald Youth Hostel. My recent experience with their management (specifically Hostel Manager Lukas) revealed a shocking level of corporate dishonesty, contradictory booking traps, and unauthorized financial charges.
Here is exactly how they operate, fully documented:
1. The "Bait-and-Switch" Booking Trap
When I booked my stay via Hostelworld, my confirmation email explicitly stated under their Cancellation Policy: "You can cancel up to 14 days before the arrival date." I canceled my trip 15 days in advance, fully complying with their stated policy. However, the hostel aggressively demanded a 100% cancellation penalty (CHF 440.64), pointing to a contradictory "Non-refundable" label hidden elsewhere in the same email. They deliberately use conflicting terms so they can advertise flexible cancellations to get you to book, but enforce ruthless penalties whenever it suits them.
2. The Lie and The Unauthorized Charge (The Theft)
The most alarming issue is how they handle your financial data. After I disputed the contradictory terms, I explicitly asked them to confirm my card would not be automatically charged. On May 16th, the Hostel Manager put it in writing: "We don't have your complete credit card details. There will be no further charges."
Trusting this explicit written guarantee, I agreed to settle the balance by bank transfer once they provided a standard receipt for my travel insurance. Instead, they lied. Two days later, they maliciously forced a charge of CHF 440.64 to my credit card anyway, casually emailing me to say, "You have already paid everything with us." Charging a customer’s credit card after putting in writing that you will not do so is not a mistake—it is unauthorized billing and blatant deception. Your payment data is NOT safe with them.
3. The Insurance Cover-Up ("Double-Dipping")
Because I canceled over two weeks in advance, I asked management for a simple, standard letter confirming whether my 4-bed room was resold to other guests, which my travel insurance requires to verify my loss. They completely ignored the request. Why? Because they are almost certainly "double-dipping"—extorting my full payment while reselling the exact same room to new travelers, and they don't want a paper trail of their unjust enrichment.
4. The Insult
After executing an unauthorized charge on my credit card and stonewalling my insurance claim, the manager actually had the audacity to email me offering to "invite me to dinner" if I ever returned to the hostel. I don't want a patronizing dinner; I want the money you took without authorization.
The Bottom Line:
Swiss Youth Hostels claims to have a wholesome mission, but this specific branch operates like a predatory tourist trap. They will weaponize confusing fine print, lie to you about the security of your credit card, process unauthorized charges, and obstruct your travel insurance claims. Save yourself the legal headache, protect your bank account, and book anywhere else in Grindelwald. I have reported their conduct to the Swiss consumer protection authorities (SECO) and initiated a fraud chargeback with my bank.
