Good hotel with quirks

The hotel is good and affordable, and there is a good breakfast. The only flaw was that we bought 4 "Michel" juices the evening before and then had to discover that all the expiration dates had passed by up to 7 days. When I complained, the host came up with the excuse that millions of years old salt is mined in the Himalayas and here the salt has an expiration date; I wonder if he would give the food inspector that same answer. He could have given me a discount, as is common in retail even a day before the expiration date. It's good for him; now he has gotten rid of his slow-moving items without a loss.

Good stuff!

Great service and incredible food! The portions were large and they even had gluten free options. The gluten free pizza was very good! Owner was kid and came over to check to make sure I got my food.

Screaming angry owners and ok food

There is a right and a wrong way to deal with things, and having the male owner scream at the leaders in the middle of the restaurant, for simply joining 3 tables together, with all the Scouts watching on, was extremely inappropriate.
As a group of 24 scouts and 11 leaders we prebooked for all 35 of us and chose the meals weeks in advance for around 900 chf. The initial welcome we received was not 'welcoming' as mentioned above, the fact we were the only group in the restaurant and only moved our reserved tables made the reaction by the owner even stranger, and that set the atmosphere for the rest of the meal. The lady owner was passive aggressive throughout, had no interest in being polite and continously tutted and frowned at anything and everything minimal our group did, even when one of our Scouts was poorly.
At this point it worth saying that the lady who was serving our meals and drinks, as well as the young girl who was on the ice cream counter, were both lovely and provided a good service.
We were suggested this restaurant, but the experience we had was far from pleasant and unfortunately, while the pizzas were nice enough, the boiled style burgers did help to improve the overall evening.

Good Price quality ratio

As part of a trip organized by Allibert half board, we had a room and bathroom very clean.
Evening meals and breakfasts, good in terms of quality and quantity.

One of the worst hotel experiences I’ve had – avoid if hiking or expecting basic service

I stayed at Hotel des Alpes in Kandersteg as part of a Via Alpina trekking trip, and I would strongly advise others to avoid it — especially hikers or international travellers expecting a minimum level of service or safety.
When I arrived, there was no one at reception, no welcome, no explanation — just a wall of instructions in German only. I had no idea how to check in properly or what to do with the key. Our names, room numbers, and keys were left on a sheet of paper, which felt like a clear violation of privacy.
Worse was the morning I tried to leave. The main door was locked, and I had received no instructions on how to exit the building. I tried everything — ringing the bell, knocking on doors — before I finally had to top up my phone and call the hotel. The person who answered was rude, unhelpful, and could not explain anything in proper English. She just kept repeating “I’m not there” and refused to help or send anyone. When I asked clearly for help or said I’d call the police, she hung up on me. I eventually found a key in a panel by the door — something she could’ve explained in seconds.
This situation was stressful, unsafe, and unacceptable. I lost over 30 minutes, missed breakfast, and started my hike late and frustrated.
A few other major issues:
No staff presence at all — even in the morning. You're completely on your own.
Breakfast starts at 8 a.m., far too late if you’re hiking — which most people in Kandersteg are.
Curtains are too short and badly fitted, so expect to wake up with the sun.
The pillow was one of the most uncomfortable I’ve ever encountered — basically unusable.
Locked front door without clear exit instructions raises serious fire safety concerns.
I have stayed in many mountain hotels, hostels, and huts across Europe and the world — this is the only place where I’ve ever felt truly unsafe and unwelcome. The complete lack of staff, communication, and accountability is shocking.
Avoid this hotel if you want a peaceful, supported hiking trip — or even just a safe and respectful stay.
