Beautiful stay in a beautiful setting

Beautiful room in a fairytale castle on the lake. We were surprised with a room upgrade that touched us very, very much due to our travel reason.

A lovely lakeside hotel

We loved our stay at Chateau D’Ouchy - it feels five star in many ways despite being four stars. The concierge team in particular were super helpful when we requested a room change for a better view, and gave us pool passes and use of facilities after checkout before our flight home. The sauna and pool are excellent and whilst some fixtures and fittings are a tiny bit dated the overall experience (and incredibly comfy beds) with an unmatched location (two minutes from the lake and the metro) made this a wonderful stay. We didn’t try the restaurant, and the lobby feels a little dated/not somewhere you necessarily relax, but this wasn’t important to us.

Unacceptable breakfast service ruins an otherwise beautiful SLH hotel

While Château d’Ouchy is clean and the staff are generally friendly, the breakfast experience was a complete disaster that ruined my mood and my entire stay. When booking a luxury hotel that proudly carries the Small Luxury Hotels of the World (SLH) seal, you absolutely expect premium, flawless service, above all during breakfast. What I experienced instead was a chaotic cafeteria atmosphere.
When I arrived for breakfast, I was completely ignored by staff who were preoccupied with clearing tables. No one greeted me or showed me to a table, so I had to seat myself. I sat there waiting and waiting, but nobody ever bothered to come over and ask if I wanted coffee or tea.
I walked over to the buffet, which looked good, but the room itself is poorly designed and far too narrow. The worst part is the coffee setup. For a hotel in this price category, forcing guests to stand in line for a self-service coffee machine like in a cheap everyday diner is unacceptable. I wasted 15 minutes waiting in line. The machine is complicated to use, making it highly uncomfortable to figure out which button to press while a queue of impatient guests is staring at your back. Furthermore, the corridor is so cramped that you are constantly being pushed aside because the staff are trying to squeeze past you to do their work.
This stressful experience completely ruined my appetite. I have experienced far superior breakfast service in significantly cheaper hotels. I will definitely not return here unless management radically changes this unacceptable breakfast system and brings it up to the luxury level guests are actually paying for.
