Amasing stay excellent location
This hotel is located precisely in front of the lake and overlooking the bridge, Mt Pilatus and the lake we had a room overlooking the lake and it was just perfect is size. Super clean. The atmosphere was nice - staff was welcoming helpful and kind. The food was superior. The hotel is walking distance from train station; restaurants and the downtown!

Wouldn't stay anywhere else
Great location, great views, wonderful restaurant, relaxing stay sets the tone for this hotel, but the staff takes it over the top. While "European" sized, we found the room to be extremely comfortable with bedding that provided a great night rest. The balcony along the river was a wonderful amenity and a place to relax and have a pre-dinner cocktail from the mini-bar. The location was easily walkable to all local attractions, the pier and train station, yet away from the noisy areas of the city. Make sure to have at least one meal in restaurant, it was the best meal we had. We interacted often with front desk staff and found everyone with a strong desire to make sure we had a wonderful Lucerne trip, quick to offer dining, transportation and activity recommendations.

Amazing stay in Lucerne
Our stay at Hotel des Balances was the perfect way to end our honeymoon in Lucerne. The room we chose was absolutely beautiful, and the location and service exceeded all of our expectations.
What truly made our experience unforgettable was the kindness and honesty of the staff. After we had already flown back to Australia, my wife realised she had accidentally left behind a bracelet we had purchased as a special honeymoon keepsake. The hotel found it, contacted us straight away, and kindly arranged to post it back to us.
We are incredibly grateful for the care and effort the team went to. It’s rare to come across such genuine hospitality, and it meant so much to us. Thank you for making the final stop of our honeymoon so memorable. We would happily stay here again and highly recommend Hotel des Balances to anyone visiting Lucerne.

Ranked #1 in Lucerne — nowhere near it
Ranked number one in Lucerne. Nothing about our three-night stay came close to justifying that.
Start with the staff, because it was the worst part. In three days we were not greeted once. No good morning at breakfast, no acknowledgement at reception, not a single smile from anyone. Not rudeness exactly — simply an absence of any warmth or hospitality at all. At this price, in a hotel of this reputation, that is inexcusable.
Housekeeping then failed outright. We hung out the green rope, which is the hotel's own signal that a room should be serviced. The room was not cleaned. There is also no complimentary water in the room, which is standard almost everywhere at this level.
The building does not work as a hotel. There are steps just to reach the rooms, and this applies to every room in the house — a serious problem for older or less mobile guests, and something the hotel does not make clear when you book. There is then a further step inside the room itself, between the living area and the bathroom. The corridors are awkward and disjointed. The entrance is unimpressive and the reception area is tiny, so arrival feels cramped rather than welcoming.
The room design is poor. The sliding bathroom door is so loud that we deliberately left it open overnight rather than risk being woken by it — that is the state of the fittings.
Breakfast was a further disappointment: a limited, unimaginative selection with none of the variety you would expect from a hotel positioning itself at the top of the market. We chose to eat every remaining meal elsewhere.
Lucerne has genuinely good places to eat and stay. This is not one of them, and the ranking does not reflect the experience. We will not return.
