Extremely rude host

I arrived at Utopia Hostel around 1:45 pm, fully aware that check-in wasn’t until 3 pm. I just hoped to drop off my VERY HEAVY bags before heading out for lunch, but even that seemed like too much to ask. When I arrived, the reception area was empty—no staff in sight. Thankfully, a fellow guest let me in. I messaged the host to let him know I was at reception, and his response was, “Didn’t you see check-in at three o’clock?” It wasn’t exactly the warm welcome I was hoping for. I politely asked if I could leave my bags, but he replied, “麻煩看一下時間,三點以後再來,” which means, “Please check the time and come back after three o’clock.” He then ignored my messages entirely, so I had no choice but to leave my bags at reception and head out for lunch.
When I returned at 3 pm, the host was finally at the reception desk. He opened the door but didn’t greet me—no smile, no “hello”—just a demand to remove my shoes. His next words were a blunt “PASSPORT.” I even sarcastically said, “please,” just to see if he’d soften, but he just repeated “PASSPORT” again, without any attempt at politeness. It was a rough start, to say the least.
I have also seen multiple other reviews of people stating how rude and aggressive this host/owner was during their stays here. I’ve also seen that this guy has even posted a CCTV recording of guests who had complained on his Facebook page, I mean, talk about unprofessional. And if you see the way he responds to some of these reviews, it’s LAUGHABLE! I wish I had seen the reviews on here before booking this place because I maybe would have thought twice about staying here. How does this owner expect to continue getting business if he treats guests in a rude manner?
That said, the next day, he did become a bit more helpful. For example, he helped me arrange a scooter rental, even taking me to the place to sort it out, which I appreciated. It’s clear he has his moments, though the initial encounter left a lasting impression.
The property itself is basic but functional. The room has decent air conditioning, and the bed turned out to be more comfortable than I expected. However, the Wi-Fi in the room is quite slow. Downstairs, the Wi-Fi is much better, but using the common area isn’t the most pleasant experience, as it tends to be quite stuffy. The owner doesn’t seem to like having the aircon on too high, so it’s not the best spot if you need to get some work done, which I needed to do one day. I asked him to lower the aircon, and while he did so briefly, it became stuffy again soon after.
One concerning other issue I encountered was finding large shards of glass in my pod. When I mentioned this to the host, he acknowledged that a previous guest had broken a glass there but seemed more interested in blaming the guest than apologising for the oversight. Eventually, he asked if I needed help cleaning it up, but I declined. I did point out that if he knew about the broken glass, it would have made sense to do a deep clean before the next guest arrived. He just shrugged it off and said “It’s only me here cleaning” “I have no staff”, which wasn’t exactly reassuring.
When it came time to check out, the experience was again less than ideal. The host wasn’t around, and I needed help arranging a taxi, as Uber doesn’t operate in this town and the local taxi apps require a Taiwanese phone number. Unfortunately, without any staff to assist, I missed the train I had planned to catch. Luckily, I managed to flag down a taxi and catch a later train, but it would have been much smoother if there was someone around to help with such arrangements.
Overall, Utopia Hostel has its positives—it’s a budget-friendly option, the rooms are decently comfortable, and if you’re lucky, the host might offer some help during your stay. However, the initial interaction left a lot to be desired, and there are some things that could definitely be improved. For a place called “Utopia,” it has its fair share of frustrations.

Nice and clean hostel.
The guy was rather unfriendly shouting at me to not enter the house with shoes!
I‘m more used to a friendly hello first of all but don‘t expect that here 😅.
Nothing the less a good hostel to stay.

the male administrator was not friendly and not welcoming, every time I go to the hostel he never greets me. I urgently needed to leave 2 days early, I tried to negotiate a refund on the spot, unfortunately they refused me. I lost 2 days of money. Draw your own conclusions, think several times before checking into this hotel.
