My little bit of Heaven in Uganda.
Enough!
My own visit went perfectly as always. I make point of staying here whenever in Uganda, never had a poor meal or suffered surly staff. Indeed it could be said that a stay at Mweya is a main driver for my return to Uganda. Please see my reviews of October 2024 and others.
Every visit has been marked by a warm and friendly welcome and as most of the Staff regretably change over time this welcome can hardly be just for me personally as a returning guest. I feel it is genuine for everyone.
I did use the normal terraced bungalows in the early years and found them more than satisfactory but when the two classic tents were built I tried them and have never switched back. They are lovely but don't use them if you are of nervous disposition. Your slumbers may be disturbed by buffalo and even lion and most definitely the local warthogs who may be in resident, day and night , under the platform of your tent.
The tents overlook the Kazinga channel where elephant and buffalo can be observed coming and going on the opposite bank. Birdlife is constant and variable. Anything from the African Fish Eagle to small sunbirds pop by from time to time. One can take this all in from the comfort and safety (and relative silence) of a rocking chair or sofa outside the tent. I spend many an hour between game drives or other activities just sitting and watching everything and anything. The local warthogs are quite unafraid and you can get visits from the local tribe of Banded Mongoose too. Don't stroke them. They may bite.
Inside the tent is spacious with two large beds and full electrics on a nearby desk and chair. Cooliing fan avavailable in the heat of an afternoon. Ample daily supply of bottled water and a fridge in which to keep a few 'Nile Safaris'. There is a combination Safe in a wardrobe for your valuables.
Behing the main living area is a dressing area with wardrobes and from there a further opening enters the well equipped bathroom with twin 'his and her' wash basins and units. To the left and right of those are a roomy shower stall or the WC with separate privacy door and lighting.
Access to the main hotel area is via steps and over lawns neatly kept in trim by the grazing of buffalo and busy Warthogs. Quite safe paths then lead to the main building but DO make use of an escort after dark. You can request this via the telephone intercom unit at any time.
The main building contains Reception, entrance and several areas for lounging inside or outside on terraces. Further on you will find an extremely comfortable Bar and the Maitre D desk for the dining room. all having access to the extraordinary views over Lake Edward and the channel, to the Rwenzori mountains.
Restaurant is clean and airconditioned and well laid out. Food is delicious and well presented. Serving staff friendly, attentive and helpful. Drinks available to accompany your meal. Or you have the option of eating, certainly at lunch time, on the outside terraces but beware of Lake flies in certain seasons. They are not biters but can be a darn nuisance to your enjoyment.
Please ignore my recommendations for the Tents as I don't want you all booking them out and prevent my inevitable return to my little bit of Heaven on this earth.
