An amazing medical elective experience!

After spending a month at Uganda Lodge, I can confidently say this was the most enriching and amazing place I’ve ever stayed. Whether I was working in the hospital, playing with the children at the school, or experiencing an afternoon in town with the locals - I always felt welcome and taken care of. I did my Medical Elective here, and would recommend it to any student in a similar position!!

Uganda Lodge a wonderful place to stay

I absolutely love Uganda Lodge and the school. I had a dress made for $20 US dollars and was so happy. It’s quiet and lovely not fancy but had everything I needed. Great place

Practically perfect in every way

What an amazing and life changing place - both for us and for the children who study at the school next door. My experience was one I will never forget

Wonderful experience!

I found Uganda Lodge to have a 'volunteer ' holiday with my 17 year old daughter - we like to be busy and are not beach holiday people. This fit the bill perfectly. As Ann (founder) lives near me, she kindly met us before we went, to answer all our questions. She is happy for people to get in touch if they want to find out more.
Full board accommodation (x3 meals a day) in rooms with western style ensuite. Beds with mosquito nets and duvets (yes, it can be chilly here, so a sweatshirt is a must in the evening).
We spent most of the time at the school (3 min walk within the same compound) helping with lessons and I did some teacher training. I also got involved around the Lodge with painting animals under room numbers, teaching staff how to knit, having drumming lessons from some pupils and a wonderful basket making session with Dorothy (starting with cutting out own papyrus plants).
The food is mainly Ugandan fare and plentiful, chips and spaghetti also available! It is so relaxed but there is always stuff going on to get involved with.
My daughter loved the school, helping out in younger classes and making friend with the older pupils, some the same age as her.
I love the sunrise hikes over the surrounding hills ( thanks Jane and Denis for guiding!) - sets you up for the day.
It is also so easy to organize a safari with Denis. We opted for Queen Elizabeth. We stayed at 2 local fishing villages in Denis's banda huts. Very rural with a fire at night and elephants, hippos and warthog very near! Lovely experience.
Apart from wonderful staff, feeling completely safe at all times, having a doctor and health clinic opposite and meeting some great volunteers, one of the best things about staying here is that all proceeds from your stay go to the school and supporting the other vocational projects for all the young people in the area. Very worthwhile!

Incredible Trip

From the moment I arrived at the lodge, I felt completely looked after. They even organised my transport from the airport making it such a seamless journey. The staff are all really friendly and go out of their way to make you feel at home.
The lodges are all clean and contain western toilets and showers. Clean sheets were provided weekly too. Meals are provided three times per day in a buffet style and were so delicious. There is a bar area with a pool table and campfire that gets lit at nighttimes; and a communal dining area. A highlight of mine was spending evenings around the campfire - some nights the staff would join in after their shift to teach us how to dance. It always ended in lots of laughter!
You are completely free to plan your day as you wished. Volunteering opportunities included helping in the school and getting involved in DIY projects around the grounds. The school children and teachers are always so happy to have help in the classrooms, and both love to learn from you. There are opportunities to learn traditional crafts taught by local people, such as mat making and basket weaving. I really enjoyed the mat making class, where I was guided through each step.
The surrounding grounds offer beautiful hiking trails, and my sunrise walks were my favourite way to start the day. It’sso fascinating to see all of the fresh produce being grown locally. The town of Ntungamo is only 20 minute drive away, the supermarket here has most things you might need. I cannot thank everyone enough for such a wonderful stay, it’s an experience I’ll never forget. I cannot recommend Uganda Lodge enough.
