a relaxing stay
My husband and I had a great stay at Bawdsey hall. David was very welcoming. Our first floor room was spacious and comfortable with a lovely view. Each morning there was a delicious breakfast served in our room - a real treat and a great way to start the day.
We enjoyed the local sights, such as Sutton Hoo, Orford and local pubs. We would happily recommend Bawdsey hall to anyone visiting that area.

Another enjoyable stay at Bawdsey Hall
In April of this year my wife and myself visited Bawdsey Hall. Having first visited the place in 2008 and having been regular visitors since then, we have been able to see for ourselves how David and Charlotte have invested a lot of time and money to make the experience as enjoyable as possible for visitors. Initially there was no wildlife pond or hide which you can now use for viewing and photographing the owls, deer, badgers and herons. Nor was there any CCTV available if you preferred to watch the wildlife from the comfort of your room at night. To be able to sit in your room and observe the varied wildlife in front of you is worth a lot in our view. We realise that everyone has different tastes, but in our opinion that is worth so much more than being in a plush hotel where the outlook is far less attractive.
What we have always encountered at Bawdsey is a friendly environment and advice on where we needed to go to observe the wildlife, especially the species of birds which we don't see in our home county of Cheshire. For example, we never thought that we would see or hear a Nightingale or Nightjar, but David's local knowledge pinpointed the exact locations where we successfully encountered them.
As for the bedrooms they are large, and again we realise that some people would prefer the enclosed ensuite within their room, but we have never encountered any problem with the bathroom being opposite to our room. The fact that there are so few bedrooms means that you rarely see anyone else at the property. The bathroom itself is large and in our experience has always been clean, with shampoo and soap being provided.
We have always found that the breakfast which is brought to your room has always been first rate, whether cooked or continental, and is a chance to catch up with David about recent wildlife sightings.
To sum up, if you are looking for a tranquil getaway surrounded by lots of wildlife and a knowledgeable expert with a wealth of experience to guide you in the right direction, and are prepared to accept the fact that you will be staying in a manor house steeped in history but which is also home to David, Charlotte and their children, then you will enjoy your stay at Bawdsey Hall.

Planning to go back in late Autumn after wonderful stay
The facilities were very good, the room was large with a very comfortable bed. The illuminated area vowed from the room at night was a delight. The Tawny Owls feeding, hooting and flying was wonderful. We also enjoyed watching three Polecats darting in and out of a hedge to grab some food.
Breakfast delivered to the room by our wonderful host David set us up for the day.
I will say the hosts made us feel so welcome we felt like family.
David, because of our interest in flora and fauna arranged an early morning meeting with Matthew the Moth man, extraordinary hundreds of Moths identified.

Disappointed
We chose Bawdsey Hall because the idea of a bed and breakfast set in a nature reserve, with animals and beautiful surroundings, sounded wonderful. After reading the previous reviews, we arrived with high expectations, but unfortunately our experience didn't match them.
First impressions were disappointing. The porch and entrance were cluttered with assorted items including boxes, plastic sheeting, an old piano and general clutter, which made the property feel neglected rather than welcoming. Inside, there were numerous artificial plants which were very dusty, and overall the entrance lacked the warm atmosphere we had expected.
Our room itself was spacious, contained some lovely furniture and had a beautiful view. Unfortunately, cleanliness was inconsistent. The bathroom, although private and just across the hallway, was not clean enough. The shower head was heavily coated in green limescale and the shower screen had significant brown staining. Toiletries were provided, but the condition of the shower made us reluctant to use it. The fridge in the room also contained dried milk stains from previous guests, and although tea and coffee were supplied, there were no spoons or fresh milk available.
The bed was comfortable, but we stayed during very hot weather (around 35°C) and the room was made up with an extremely heavy duvet, complete with an electric blanket still plugged in, which seemed rather inappropriate for the season.
Breakfast being delivered to the room was a nice idea, but unfortunately the cooked breakfast was only lukewarm and the toast was cold by the time it arrived.
Overall, there were some positive aspects, particularly the location, views and comfortable bed, but the lack of cleanliness and attention to detail significantly affected our stay. Given the price of £160 for one night, we expected a much higher standard. Sadly, we would not choose to stay again or recommend it in its current condition.

Not what you think
This is a difficult review in which to get the balance right. Some people love this place others hate it. As the title states, it's not what you think. In my review I shall concentrate on what you actually get.
The minute that you book, you are sent a set of instructions, yes instructions. These include setting an arrival time after 4.30pm, so that you can be met. Looking at other reviews, no one has ever actually been met.
You might think that you are staying at a country house. You are not. Think of it as shown on that Channel Four series 'Chateau DIY'. The owners have done up four double bedrooms and four bathrooms. The rest of the house is a wreck (I mean that literally) and freezing cold. The fact they advertise electric blankets on the beds is a warning. Everywhere outside the bedrooms is very, very dirty.
From the carefully staged photos, the impression is that the owners, own everything within the boundary walls. Not so, there are actually three properties that share the land. A lot seems to be made about the couple running this establishment. They state that they wish to respect your privacy. That is an excuse for being invisible. They want your money, whilst doing the minimum to earn it.
Breakfast arrived on our first morning. It was cold, stone cold. Even the coffee. The second morning, I was literally standing by the door waiting for breakfast to arrive. I rushed out and caught some guy, who was dressed in overalls, called Dave, and said that I wanted to check that the food was hot. He was miffed but didn't seem to care that he was preparing inedible food. The instructions ask you to leave your breakfast dishes outside your room. The don't bother to collect them until about 10pm each day. One odd thing is that according to the guest book, no one has ever seen the wife of the owner!
The wildlife cameras were not connected as it wasn't nesting season. They don't mention that in the blurb.
The room itself was very well presented, as was the bathroom. The views out over the garden were great. Even the wildlife turned up each day. They included pheasants, moorhens and muntjac deer. As far as we could see every bird feeder was completely empty.
If you think that you are booking a hotel or B&B and are looking for that level of service, think again and definitely look elsewhere. If you are looking to book a country pile, that has seen better days and the service is sparce, then go for it. If you do choose to book this location, look at what you are being charged and be certain of your choice.
