Wonderful Rosario
I left feeling noticeably more relaxed and my neck and back felt fantastic afterwards. You can tell Rosario takes genuine pride in her work and has a real talent for what she does.
She is also such a lovely person, and I really enjoyed chatting with her and hearing a little about her life and her home country of Peru. I genuinely couldn’t recommend Rosario highly enough. If you’re looking for a skilled, caring and professional masseuse, book with Rosario — you won’t regret it!

A Birthday Treat That Left Us Disappointed
We specifically chose and requested rooms with showers because my mum has mobility issues and using a bath is difficult for her. Thankfully, a shower was provided.
On arrival, both rooms were clean and bright, but overall they were disappointing. They were very basic, sparse and uninviting, and both overlooked the car park. Considering this was a birthday stay and the price the hotel charges its guests, we had expected a little more comfort and attention to detail. For a well-established hotel, we felt the rooms did not quite reflect the standard or value we would expect for the cost of the stay.
The bed itself was comfortable and the shower was powerful. There wasn’t much room around the sink for toiletries and personal products, which was not easy, but we managed to make it work.
In the room shared by myself and my sister, there were no bedside lamps, just the main ceiling lights, although the switches were by the beds. The wardrobe doors were also missing, leaving our belongings open and on display. Even something as simple as having wardrobe doors with mirrors would have been nice, particularly when getting ready.
These details added to the overall impression that little thought had gone into the room. It felt very basic and lacked the warmth, comfort and attention to detail you would expect from an established hotel of this standard and price.
There was also no information provided in the room about the hotel or its facilities. The only information available was a room service menu, which was disappointing as there was no guide to the hotel amenities, facilities or useful information for guests during their stay.
There was also no telephone in the room. We were told this was due to sustainability. For a hotel of this standard and price, I found the removal of such a basic facility difficult to understand, particularly when there was also no information in the room.
My mum had to ring the number listed on the hotel website because she wanted to ask about the facilities, including whether there was a fridge, as we still had some milk left over from our stay at the lodge. Had we known a fridge wouldn’t be in the room, we would have drunk the milk before our arrival. Being lied to is not something I appreciate, especially when staying in a hotel that’s no cheap & that states what is available and then just removes it, with no mention to guests and seemingly no concern about the lack of amenities, then shoving the sustainability issue into the conversation. This is not acceptable.
I don’t know who my mum spoke to, but unfortunately the woman who answered was rude, dismissive and unhelpful. She either needed considerably more training in customer service or should have handled the enquiry in a much more helpful and polite manner.
The leisure facilities were a mixed experience. The pool was clean and nice, although we didn’t actually use it. We did use the outdoor jacuzzi, which was dirty, but being outside this was perhaps to be expected. There also weren’t many chairs or loungers around. On a couple of days over the weekend the weather was pleasant enough to sit outside, but there wasn’t enough seating.
Breakfast was good, with a nice variety, and the restaurant staff were pleasant.
Throughout our four-day stay, we arrived at breakfast quite early, around 8.15–8.30am, hoping for a relaxed breakfast and to choose what we wanted without being rushed by pushy or rude guests.
One morning breakfast was initially much quieter, but sadly that didn’t last. Another guest who was also celebrating a birthday arrived, accompanied by a large gaggle of loud friends. Everyone in the restaurant certainly knew about it.
The atmosphere quickly changed, with all of these guests circling and descending on the buffet, they behaved appallingly, like vultures surrounding a dead carcass, with little consideration for others who were also trying to enjoy their breakfast.
It was difficult not to notice some guests repeatedly circling the buffet and watching the food, almost as though waiting for the next opportunity to get back in & with no consideration for anyone who had just arrived.
Some people stood very close behind us, almost breathing down your neck, seemingly hoping you would hurry up. Groups gathered around the buffet, took their time and blocked access so that others couldn’t even get to the bread or other items.
At times, the buffet was running low while we were sitting at our table, and we sometimes had to wait to get more toast before staff could replenish it.
The greed of the children at the table next to us, allowed and encouraged by their parents, was gross and unnecessary to watch. Some of the children were taking food they clearly had little interest in eating, and the amount of food being chosen and then left uneaten was disgusting to watch, particularly when the buffet was already running low. The fact that this was allowed and encouraged by their parents made it even more frustrating.
There was also constant shrieking and noise from some guests, which was enough to make us eat quickly rather than enjoy what should have been a relaxing birthday breakfast.
I appreciate that the behaviour of other guests was not the hotel’s fault, but it certainly affected the atmosphere and our overall experience.
The location also wasn’t the best for us, especially as we wanted to be able to walk to anywhere nearby, due to my mother’s mobility problems, It wasn’t particularly easy to walk to places, which made the location less convenient for us.
There were positives: the beds were comfortable, the showers were powerful, the pool was clean, breakfast had a good selection and the restaurant staff were pleasant.
However, there were too many disappointments for us to feel that the stay represented particularly good value. We weren’t expecting anything extravagant, but when you pay the prices this hotel charges, you do expect the rooms and facilities to reflect that.
Overall, it was nice enough for a night, but I wouldn’t recommend it for a longer stay.

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY !
I have stayed in hotels all over the world, and I can honestly say that Macdonald Berystede Hotel & Spa in Ascot was one of the worst hotel experiences I have ever had.
The photographs and description of this hotel are incredibly misleading. What you see online is not what you experience once you arrive.
The rooms were dirty. The hallways and elevators smelled strongly of what I can only describe as dirty, wet dogs. The carpets throughout the property were worn and unpleasant, and the overall feeling was one of a hotel that desperately needs a complete refurbishment and deep cleaning.
Even something as basic as contacting the front desk was absurd. There was no simple way to call reception from the room — you apparently had to make an international telephone call. For a hotel charging the prices it does, this is simply ridiculous.
The service was equally disappointing. Every request seemed to require someone to “ask a manager.” Rather than staff being empowered to help guests, we were repeatedly met with delays and a lack of urgency. The staff seemed remarkably lax about addressing even relatively simple requests.
At one point, management had to be strongly urged simply to apply our credit card to the spa experience. This should have been an extraordinarily simple transaction, yet even that became an unnecessary ordeal.
Then there was the spa.
The spa has a hot pool where the water was yellow and smelled. I cannot understand how management could consider that acceptable, let alone invite paying guests to use it. A spa should feel clean, relaxing and hygienic. This did not.
The layout of the hotel was another nightmare. The room configuration forces guests to navigate stairs, long dark hallways and extremely poor signage just to get to their rooms or find other facilities in the building. Finding your way around should not feel like navigating a maze.
And then there was the food.
The food was, at best, marginal. But perhaps the most astonishing part was the coffee. How does a hotel manage to mess up coffee? When even a basic cup of coffee is disappointing, you begin to wonder what exactly you are paying for.
This hotel has the potential to be beautiful. The historic building and location in Ascot should make it a wonderful place to stay. But potential doesn’t make up for dirty rooms, foul-smelling carpets, questionable spa water, poor signage, mediocre food and seriously lacking customer service.
This isn’t about expecting perfection. It is about expecting basic cleanliness, maintenance, hospitality and value for the money.
Macdonald Berystede fails on all four.
I would not stay here again, and I absolutely would not recommend it to friends or family.
If you are considering booking this hotel, read the recent reviews carefully and look beyond the beautiful photographs on the website. You may want to spend your money somewhere else.
One star — only because zero stars isn’t an option.

Overpriced and disappointing family stay
But I expect awful lot more for £280/night. Upside is all staff were pleasant and outside hot tub is nice.
