The Mount Rooms
The Mount Rooms is set in Barry, 6 km from Penmark Castle and 6 km from Fonmon Castle. Guests can enjoy the on-site bar. Free private parking is available on site on a first come, first serve basis. Every room is equipped with a flat-screen TV.

Basic but wonderful, thank you
Everything was better than expected!
We had read some less than positive reviews and wondered what to expect when we arrived but we needn't have worried!
The lady on reception wad so friendly and helpful, check in was a breeze, our room was lovely, at the front of the building with a view of the sea and Barry Island funfair.
Shower, bath, toilet and sink were spotlessly clean. Plenty of toilet roll, a bath mat and a hand towel and bath towel each.
Water was HOT and plentiful!
Tea, coffee, sugar, milk and kettle. Two cups. One spoon. When we asked for more milk on day two the lady bagged up a whole new tea and coffee package too.
The bed was RIDICULOUSLY COMFORTABLE. (We took our own pillows)
Parking was free!
There was a fan in the room BUT it was on a timer.
Honestly? A few tiny tweaks like:
Better quality pillows and 2 per person,
matching full size mugs for the tea and coffee,
two spoons,
A fan without a timer on it,
A plug socket on the other side of the room
And run a hoover over the whole place.
Otherwise, it was perfect as was!

A glorified hostel operating under false pretences – avoid!
The only positive thing about this hotel is its location: a 20-minute walk to Barry Island and 2 minutes from the local high street. You are also just 5 minutes from Wetherspoons, which is a relief because you will need to rely on it for every single meal.
This establishment barely qualifies as a hotel and feels much closer to a run-down hostel. We were told our room was "due a refurbishment," but in its current state, it is utterly unfit for guests.
False Advertising & Missing Amenities
No food: Despite claims on their website, there is no food of any description available on-site.
Non-existent facilities: Pictures online show a swimming pool, gym, and beauty room. None of these exist.
Severe Room & Maintenance Issues
Windows: Two panes were cracked and "repaired" with what looked like Sellotape. Another window was jammed wide open, and the wooden frames were completely rotten.
Bathroom safety hazards
The heated towel rail was literally hanging off the wall, and the shower head pole fell off in our hands while in use.
A glorified hostel operating under false pretences – avoid!The multi-bulb light fitting above the sink has a broken bulb, leaving the exposed base/filament still screwed into the live socket. This poses a serious risk of electric shock and requires immediate repair.
Decor & Comfort
Stained carpets, dire decor, and no mattress protector. The only seating provided was a single, creaky, plastic school chair.
Pillow shortage
The double bed came with just two paper-thin pillows. When we asked for more, reception told us there had been a "run on them." It took multiple attempts over two days to get enough pillows to sleep comfortably.
Housekeeping Failures
No cleaning: Despite hotel information promising daily housekeeping, our room wasn't touched once during our 3-night stay.
Dirty communal areas: The corridors were unvacuumed and unswept the entire time we were there.
I could keep going, but you get the picture. Do yourself a favour and book anywhere else.

Compromise on luxury for its convenience.
If it’s hot there is no air con and our sash windows on the first floor only partially open, we even had one that was nailed shut and another had an old pop bottle left there to prop it open.
The bathroom was basic. No plug for the sink and no mixer tap so you have either hot or cold water. The shower curtain was set too high so didn’t drop into the bath and water went all over the bathroom floor. Only one half full container of hand/body gel was supplied for our family room and we had to go ask for missing bath towel.
Room and bathroom were clean. Bedding looked ok but never got into the bed as the room was far too hot. Some of the pillows though were old and stained.
Not sure if this is a permanent thing but when we arrived we were told the restaurant is closed and food won’t be available during our stay, so that meant no breakfast included or alternative on offer.
Staff were excellent though, helpful and friendly.
The hotel is on a hill and in a good location, great views from the front and walking distance to the station and a pub that serves food including breakfast. If you don’t mind a bit of a longer walk you can make it down to the beach and Barry Island in around 15-20 mins. But the large car park near the beach was reasonably priced.
For the price this hotel is ok, but disappointed we were not made aware beforehand that breakfast was no longer going to be included.

Bathroom was not clean and smelt damp and musty
Facilities advertised were not available
Ie no bistro as closed and the gym did not belong to the hotel as believed

We knew before staying in a small room it was not going to be luxury! It suited our purpose - competing in Barry Triathlon. The small room we stayed in was very basic, plain white walls, small bed with flat pillows. Bathroom was adequate for our needs. We stayed for 2 nights and there was no room servicing (we were fine with this). The staff were pleasant. We stay in room 49 and apart from corridor noise we were not disturbed by the party function downstairs.
You pay for what you get and at £104 for 2 nights you get basic! It could be a bit cleaner though. It is not a hotel I would go to for a holiday or a relaxing break.
Car parking could be an issue; we were lucky to get a space. It is a very awkward car park, on quite a slope and irregularly shaped, so very tight to park if you do get a space.
