Excellent staff, but investment needed

The public areas are modern and well maintained, but the upstairs accommodation felt tired and unloved: the rooms were dated (but clean) and the corridors needed new carpets and redecorating. A rather disgusting room service tray had been left outside someone’s door when I checked in at 3pm and it was still there the following morning when I went for breakfast.
The staff are the redeeming feature of this hotel. The receptionists were charming and helpful (although for some bizarre reason seated very low down behind the reception desk so only the top half of their heads were visible). And the waitresses in the breakfast room were efficient and accommodating.
Also on the positive side, breakfast was generous and good quality and the car parking facilities were excellent.

Bizzare

There was a slightly odd start to the stay when we were told at check in that we’d been given a “complimentary upgrade” to a Deluxe Suite. The only problem was that we had actually booked and paid for a Deluxe Suite in the first place, so there was no upgrade at all.
I’m sure this was probably just a mistake, but the way it was presented felt a little uncomfortable, almost as though there was some surprise that the Deluxe Suite could have been our original booking. I don’t want to make more of it than necessary, but when you’ve specifically chosen and paid for that room category, being congratulated on receiving it for free leaves a slightly odd taste.
The bar experience the next evening however, was genuinely astonishing.
For context, this is a four star hotel and we paid upwards of £500 for two nights. I asked the bartender for a gin Martini and was told, rather dismissively, “We don’t do Martinis. This is what we do,” before being handed a cocktail menu containing, somewhat magnificently, both a Passion Fruit Martini and an Espresso Martini (?!).
I clarified that I meant a classic gin Martini. He then suggested he could “I could just add gin to these ones and then it’s the same, I guess?”. It is not the same…
I’m really not somebody who expects a bartender to produce an obscure 17-ingredient cocktail involving dry ice, elderflower harvested under a full moon and a smoking cloche. But a gin Martini is one of the most established cocktails in existence. It is essentially two ingredients. Both of which, incidentally, appeared to be sitting on the shelf behind him.
The strangest part wasn’t even that he refused to make one. If they simply didn’t serve them, fine. It was the combination of apparently not knowing what one was and treating me as though I’d made an unreasonable request by asking for it (he was very rude and dismissive, this was around 6pm on Weds 26th Aug). I genuinely struggle to imagine many four star hotel bars anywhere in the world that couldn’t manage a basic gin Martini, let alone make the customer feel like an idiot for asking for one, but nevermind. We went somewhere else for drinks both nights instead.
The room itself was very impressive. It was huge, beautifully presented and had a gorgeous four poster bed. Unfortunately, the mattress was incredibly uncomfortable and I woke up with backache, there were also very limited plugs and NO usable plugs either side of the bed.
There was also a gorgeous freestanding bath in the room, which was a lovely and luxurious touch. Slightly bafflingly, though, there was no bubble bath or bath product provided to actually use with it.
Checking out was another unnecessarily awkward experience. There was nobody at reception, no bell and no obvious way of letting anyone know we were waiting, so we stood there for quite some time before anyone appeared. Eventually, the same rather lacklustre bartender from the previous evening emerged to check us out, bringing roughly the same level of enthusiasm to the process as he had to serving drinks.
None of these things individually would ruin a stay, and there are clearly some lovely elements to the hotel. The room was spacious and visually beautiful, and the building has plenty of character and breakfast was delicious. But at this price point and with a four star rating, the service simply didn’t match the surroundings (I should note the breakfast staff however were lovely).
Overall, disappointing, and mostly because the reception/bar side of the hotel felt badly in need of better training and a little more attention to the basics. The guy in particular clearly hates his job. The bones of a genuinely lovely hotel are there. Unfortunately, so was the gin, the vermouth and a bartender who couldn’t make a Martini. Weird and slightly baffling experience all round (especially the whole upgrade thing). Bizzare and wouldn’t stay again or recommend unfortunately.

Lovely and quiet

Stayed in double room at front of hotel and over looking the river. Room was very spacious and quiet. The bathroom was modern but with little space for your personal items. Room was a tad tired, carpet tad thread bare in parts and sadly mattress was not comfortable as you felt the springs in your back and had little support.
Staff were amazing and the breakfast was yummy. Breakfast staff were helpful.and friendly. Would stay again but only in another room with a better bed. Wish I could have given more stars but due to the above which let it down.

Disappointing.

The location of this hotel is great, with the addition of plenty of free on-site parking. Friendly and polite staff. However the rooms and breakfast were disappointing. Bed was extremely soft and therefore uncomfortable as we prefer a firmer bed. Small shower over bath. Carpark floodlight shines into the room overnight, so we had to keep blackout curtains shut on a very warm night. They did provide a fan. Breakfast was very disappointing. Undercooked blackpudding and a raw tomato that hadn't been near a grill.
Very disappointing considering the cost.
