Wonderful friendly staff
A lovely pub dating back 500 years. Fantastic food, great location. Relaxed atmosphere. Coffee first class. That said its the staff who made us so very welcome. Many thanks.

Complacent at best
The Cricketers promises a lot, a fantastic location, beautiful pub, and actually the food is very tasty, but the staff could not be less friendly if they tried. Most of the staff looked like they wanted to be anywhere else but there.
Our starters came in good time, but our main courses did not appear for approx 50 mins after our starters. We had to go to the bar to chase them twice, only to be told by that it was slightly delayed because of a large party. Meanwhile, an additional two tables around us, who had ordered after us, received all of their main courses. Ours had clearly been forgotten.
On going back to the bar to pay our bill, a surly member of staff presented us with a bill which included service charge. When we queried the bill and the delay, we were made to feel like we were the problem. We were warned by the people we were staying with that the cricketers has a reputation for complacency, this is very much what we found. They are clearly a business doing well, therefore do not really care about customer experience.
I have rated it one star because actually the food was very good but check your bill for service charge which is added regardless as to whether or not you have ordered at the bar yourself.

Just great in every way!
I came for lunch today together with my elderly parents and it was absolutely fantastic!! The young chap on the bar was attentive, polite and helpful and the food was incredible! I had the bacon chop and it was delicious- the chips were the best I have genuinely ever had! My father had the crab on toast and trout and thoroughly enjoyed it and my stepmum had the pie which she said was perfect. Great choice of wine too! Beautiful garden, spotlessly clean inside and all in all a fabulous experience- my first as I live down in Surrey. Next time I am back up, we are definitely returning!
So rare to find such a gem amongst pubs these days, that actually get everything right!

Fabulous food with great service
Food was excellent with a good choice. Service was great with all staff very friendly. We will definitely be returning and can thoroughly recommend this restaurant

Could have been better - and cooler
We stayed one night whist attending a family gathering in the area and did not eat there other than at breakfast so cannot comment on the restaurant, only the B&B side of things. It was also just about the hottest day of the year. Our room was in the building over the road, accessed from the rear so away from any traffic and with an outlook over a nice garden and on to open fields. There was a table and a couple of chairs on the grass, which was nice. The orientation of the room was due south which, coupled with the large window meant that we were met with a wall of heat on opening the door. It was like stepping into an oven, even though the blinds were down. Obviously the windows in the bedroom and bathroom were immediately opened and the door left open and the fan switched to high (a recent purchase by the inn, I would guess, but the damage had been done. As our arrival had been known for a month or two, why wasn’t the room opened up and aired well before we got there?
The room was large, clean and well equipped with iron, ironing board, hair dryer, kettle and so on and there were nice quality Breakfast Tea bags – but only two of them, which looked a little mean. (Luckily, come morning, my wife managed to find a tea bag of two in the bottom of her handbag.) There was no fridge in the room (which could have been expected at the price point, I think, so milk was UHT capsules though a flask of fresh was available with a trip across the road to the main pub.
The bathroom was initially impressive and large, with a walk-in shower, sink and full size bath and there were good quality soap, shampoo and other cosmetic dispensers – bolted to the wall. This was all very well in the shower were they were just a stretch away, but as the shower only had an overhead drench and my wife decided she did not want to risk getting her hair wet before we headed off (which lady would, one wonders,) so took a bath instead only to find the soap dispenser was attached to the wall by the sink about ten feet away! I know guests will nick these things, but nothing in reach of the bath? Whilst on the subject of the bathroom, there were no facecloths (price point, again,) the sink was shallow and small and sloshed all over the floor and the single ply toilet roll seemed to have been sized for a Wendy house rather than adults. Economy is all very well, I am generally in favour but postage stamp sheets?
We went off to the family do and returned much later to a room that was, despite having the windows open, blinds down and the fan running for hours, was still very, very hot. (There was noticeable heat soak through the ceiling from the flat roof above.) The only bedding was a thick bedspread and a duvet with a tog value more suited to an expedition to the Northern Lights – in winter. The bedspread went into the (usefully large) wardrobe followed by the inner of the duvet, the outer pressed into service by my wife as a sheet. The bed was nice and large and very comfortable (once excess pillows and cushions (a pointless but universal modern trend,) had been scattered, but that mattered little as the night was long and devoid of sleep.
Breakfast next morning was probably best described as average. There were no pastries or fresh fruit and the cooked English was of a similar standard to an old-days Little Chef (no bad thing, in itself, but hardly remarkable.) Luckily, the kitchen had a ready supply of teabags, even if the room didn’t.
In conclusion, it could easily have been so much better with very little additional input. There could have been facecloths, accessible soap dispensers, more teabags (and why not a selection – lots of people drink Earl Grey, for example,) a baby fridge with chilled water and fresh milk available (without a trip over the road,) something other than a heavyweight duvet on the bed and the room could have been pre-aired, not left to build heat until we got there, so ensuring the ruination of the night’s sleep. At not far short of £200 for the night, none of the above should be thought of as exceptional.

Thank you for the detailed review. As you said your visit coincided with the hottest day of the year so far and given the nature of the rooms it has been a constant battle against ever increasing temperatures. I fully take on board your comments about how we could have gone about to mitigate the heat lock in some of the rooms that are south facing.
Generally we have followed the advice of airing rooms after cleans and just having to keep an eye on them so local cats and wildlife don't find a home.
We do have a change over for summer and winter in terms of duvets. Frustratingly I think your room got missed on the change.
Points about soap location and face towels have been taken on as well. Nobody has ever mentioned face towels before and this is a great example of constructive feedback leading to improvements.
