Good lunch in snug bar (dogs permitted in this area)
Peebles High Street was busy on a Friday afternoon and our first attempt at getting lunch failed when we discovered Coltman’s Kitchen was full.
Fortunately, although The Crown was also very busy, we managed to get a table in the snug, next to the front bar. It’s a part of the hotel which we’d never been before and whilst it is comfortable and nicely decorated we discovered it’s where guests are allowed to have their dogs. Although it’s a small area we were joined by two couples with two dogs each and another two couples with one dog each during our visit. Fortunately the pets were well behaved and quiet with the exception of one occasion where there was a brief bit of barking when a new dog entered the territory. For those not looking to dine with other peoples dogs (for allergy or other reasons) best to try and get a table elsewhere in the pub.
The menu has a good selection of meals, supplemented by quite a few “specials”. On this occasion my wife chose Chicken & Haggis, wrapped in pancetta and served with mash, vegetables and a peppercorn sauce (£18.95) from the standard menu. I decided to have one of the specials - Duck breast served on black pudding mash, with some broccoli and a wine gravy (£21.95). Despite the busy nature of the lunchtime service we didn’t wait too long for the meal to be served. My wife enjoyed the chicken and haggis (the latter not being too spicy) and her only regret was not asking for the peppercorn sauce to be served separately. She only likes a little sauce with her food and the plate came with a lot.
The duck consisted of a couple of slices, nicely cooked to be tender and the mash and veg were fine along with the tasty gravy. Overall very good.
To finish we both ordered Raspberry Roulade with ice cream (£7.50 each). We’ve had this previously in The Crown and it was up to the expected standards - very good.
For drinks I had a Guinness 0% and my wife a Diet Coke. The young waitress seemed fairly inexperienced but pleasant and after bringing the drinks to the table I had to confirm that I would like a glass with my can of Guinness.
Overall pleasant meal for just over £64 which we thought reasonable.

An understanding General Manager
Due to a client error, I needed to change my accommodation booking to a day earlier. As it was outside Booking.com's refund range I was technically stuck with a date I no longer needed.
With a call from the General manager Chris, he agreed to cancel the original booking and allocate me a room for the earlier date. As the only room available was now a double (as opposed to my original, single room booking) He agreed to make the change for a small nominal fee.
This is clearly an advantage to using small independent hotels, where a conversation can be had. Thanks Chris

Surprising
I grew up in Peebles and this year I came back to visit my sister who lives in Peebles. She put forward the idea of going to the Crown Hotel for tea and scones. It was the best tea and scone that I remember ever having in Peebles/Scotland. The service was eccellente and friendly. The next time I visit It will definately be on my list of things to do.

My wife and I went to the Crown Hotel Peebles on Sunday night,we had been told how good the meals were but were we shocked by ours.My wife had the small fish and chips (£14.50) and I had the Steak and ale pie(£17.50).Waitress never asked if I wanted potatoes or anything else.The chips were skinny chips and very crispy,the ale pie was covered with ale gravy ,the pastry was stuck to the plate (not heated)The chunks of steak were ok but the ale gravy was awful.My wife’s Half fish was a very small portion and her chips were the same as mine,terrible.we will not go back even though prices we’re terrible
