Bit of a hiccup at first but it got better

This review is for the restaurant within the hotel. We booked the day previous for dinner at 1915hrs. We arrived about an hour early and told them we had a reservation, which they confirmed. We were content to sit in the bar/lounge area until the booked time and they told us to have a seat until our table was ready. We were provided with menus to peruse while waiting, which was fine. After about 20 minutes, two wait staff came to take our order. When we said we would wait until we had our table, we were told we were actually going to be eating where we were seated, as they were fully booked with guests on a coach tour. We were not content with this, as our seats in the lounge were low and it would have been uncomfortable to eat a meal there. After having a bit of a back and forth, suddenly they provided us with a proper table. From there on, we thoroughly enjoyed our dining experience. We had vegetarian samosas as starters, slow cooked beef with mashed potatoes and grilled hake with roasted vegetables. It was all piping hot and well-prepared. An excellent meal.

Highland Legends in Autumn

To flee
Cozy looking hotel but room certainly large but limited in cleanliness (I doubted the sheets) - were in the hotel itself -
Huge shower room with large windows on the street -
One of the towels with yellowish traces -
Low quality catering -
Decent breakfast poorly organized because very small room -
Limited staff of friendliness -
No elevator

Good food but careful with your room choice

We were travelling as part of an organised tour round the NC500 and my husband tried to contact the hotel beforehand as it was for a special birthday but we didnt get a response. The hotel itself was nice enough and central.
However, we were allocated a room in the coach house and our friends one of the chalet rooms which are to the rear of the car park outside the hotel. Having looked at the photos of the main hotel rooms, it was night and day. Incredibly disappointing that we clearly didnt have the same experience as some of our fellow travellers despite paying the same. We had a room with 3 single beds with a building blocking any light coming from the side window. It was old old fashioned but comfortable enough with a good shower but fell short as was in need of updating. Funnily enough didnt see any photos of this room type on their site.
On a positive note, the staff were lovely and the food was always piping hot.

Not the best

Stayed here whilst doing the nc500, room was not what we were expecting, outside in the car park, when we arrived room was freezing with no heating on 4 degrees outside, had to go across to reception to get them to turn the heating on, went across to the hotel for dinner, waitress had over powering perfume on, food was good quality, wine selection was poor only 1 rose wine and its zinfandel. Breakfast was dreadful, worst I've had, sausage bacon and egg and a potato scone that's it for a full breakfast, all items of poor quality including the tea, certainly won't be returning to stay here.

A hidden gem with great staff

I’ll be honest: we only stayed here because we were stranded in Thurso when snow closed the roads, but we’ll definitely stay again. Tucked away from the main road through Thurso, this place is clean, cosy and friendly, and all the staff we met were happy to go the extra mile, especially as they had only just re-opened after New Year. My husband walks with a stick, and although we hadn’t asked for one, they gave us a ground floor room. The room itself was clean and cosy with a comfy bed and chairs. Food was great: dinner was lovely, the bar has a great range of malt whisky and other drinks, and breakfast was cooked and served promptly. There is a small private car park but plenty of on-street parking, and the bar was dog-friendly.
If you are staying in Thurso, I would recommend this hotel. I can’t emphasise enough how fantastic all the staff were - thank you!
