Not perfect but enjoyable
Review based on two visits: one overnight stay in May for my birthday, and a Saturday lunchtime meal in July.
Overall, we really like this place. It’s clean, traditional, full of character, and exactly the sort of pub we enjoy — the kind where you half expect someone’s dog to have a favourite chair.
The accommodation was fine for a double room. It was a little worn around the edges, but the view from the window more than made up for it. You really do feel like you are in the middle of nowhere — and that, frankly, is priceless.
On our first visit, Chloe made all the difference. I hope I have her name right — she was one of the twins, definitely not Charlotte, although Charlotte is lovely too! Chloe was welcoming, funny and friendly, and she made a great first impression. The room was clean and simple, with no issues. Lunch was great, and dinner was good too. There was a small hiccup with a cocktail that appeared to have gone undercover as a soft drink, but this was quickly corrected and replaced. The barman, whose name I sadly didn’t catch, agreed with us that the booze had taken a leave of absence.
We left happy after that first visit, which is exactly why we came back again this weekend.
For our second visit, we had pre-booked but were still able to choose our table, which was great. A waitress showed us over and brought the menus. She was polite enough, although a smile and a little more interaction would not have gone amiss. Drinks arrived swiftly; the food, however, seemed to be taking the scenic route. We ordered starters and mains, and after quite a wait we had to prompt. Unfortunately, the young waitress appeared to spend more time chatting with friends who had arrived after us — and who seemed to be fed before us. Before our own food arrived, she even left with her takeaway, which was a bold plot twist.
Thankfully, Charlotte then stepped in, the food arrived, and things improved. She dealt with our feedback about the beetroot and chilli hummus, which was pleasant enough but seemed to have mislaid the chilli. The mains were lovely, and from that point on we were looked after very well by both Charlotte and Kayleigh.
Will we return? Yes, we will. Why? Because we understand that nowhere gets it perfect every time. What matters is how issues are handled when they are raised. It was not about the discount that was offered; it was about the fact that they cared enough to put things right.
So thank you, The Boars Paw. One staff members may have let the side down on the day, but most of the team do a bloody good job — and that is why we will be back.

Beautiful wedding reception
We recently had our wedding reception at The Bear’s Paw and honestly could not have asked for a better experience from start to finish. Every single detail was handled so perfectly by the wedding planners, who made the entire process feel seamless and stress-free. You could really tell how much care and attention went into making the day special for us.
The food was absolutely fantastic — beautifully presented, generous portions and every course was delicious. So many of our guests commented on how good everything was throughout the evening.
What really made the night though was the staff. Every member of the team was warm, attentive and genuinely couldn’t do enough for us or our guests. Nothing was too much trouble and they helped create such a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere all evening. Special thanks to Charlotte and Kayleigh who managed everything brilliantly.
We also stayed on site afterwards and the accommodation was incredibly comfortable, clean and cosy — exactly what we needed after such an amazing celebration.
The Bear’s Paw gave us the most perfect wedding reception and so many wonderful memories. We would recommend it to absolutely anyone looking for a beautiful venue with outstanding service.

Best hotel I've ever stayed in!
From the moment of arrival until leaving, it was a perfect stay. Hotel spotlessly clean everywhere. The interior design was perfect -contemporary/classical. No flat packs real wood everywhere. Staff couldn't do enough for us and with such good grace. We asked on Saturday if they did a roast dinner on the Sunday. They said yes but offered to reserve us meals as it gets busy -even asked us how we'd like the beef cooked. Sure enough on the Sunday there they were, piping hot and not dried up. Vegetables were cooked to perfection and I've never tasted such perfet gravy.
We'd taken our dog with and he was
treated as well as us. He was given a welcome box with treats and a toy. In the bedroom he had a proper dog bed with 2 bowls for his food and water.
The bedroom was perfect, we'd only booked a standard room but it was more like a luxury room in other hotels so tastefully furnished and designed.
We only stayed 2 nights but could easily have stayed longer. We'll certainly go back.

Excellent
We ended up here after a really awful Airbnb experience, and honestly, this pub saved our trip. From the moment we walked in, we were made to feel welcome and looked after. Kayleigh in particular went above and beyond—she was kind, calm, and genuinely cared that we were okay.
The room was absolutely lovely and spotless, the food was really good, and they even gave us a little box of treats and a toy for our dog, which was such a thoughtful and cute touch. It turned a stressful situation into a genuinely positive memory. Great atmosphere, amazing people, and incredible service when it mattered most. We can’t thank you enough and will definitely be back.

Perfect Quality Stop
Perfect quality stop on our way north, not far from the motorway but nestled in the countryside.
Child and dog friendly so good to meet up with family and enjoy a nice meal
