Room was clean and snug, was only one small lotion so share instead of 2 and do miss elemis, but Woww amazing stay as always and lovely walk round church and grounds of hotel, pub meal was amazing as always, staff helpful and nothing too much when asked, wi fi hit and miss in newer side but did not need it much, and love round the corner is designer outlet to prolong going home after checking out, spa is high standard just like hotel, always feels a luxury treat, and breakfast is tops too

Only worth 3*
The room offered was dark and tired. There was mould in the shower tray, a piece of cotton hanging off the light fitting from the ceiling, sellotape on one of the walls and vegetation growing through the window. The room definitely had not been cleaned in some time due to the amount of dust on the door ledges and skirting boards.
After complaining at reception we were offered another room. This was a slight improvement. Smaller but definitely cleaner.
The Spa appeared to be unmanned and there was a charge for a towel of £1.50 non refundable. Too few loungers and chairs available for guests. The pool was nice for a swim. I didn't have any treatments while staying.
The Fat Abbot Pub provided a relaxed atmosphere and food on the evening was very tasty.
Breakfast was self serve and the area was tucked away in the corner of the restaurant. Items were replenished at request rather than someone overseeing this. Again the decor was tired and needed a complete deep clean.
The hotels location is perfect for York City, the Racecourse and Designer Outlet.
The price paid reflected a 4* accommodation, but this hotel is in my opinion a 3*

Lovely character hotel in a great location with thoughtful touches
We stayed for one night as a couple for my partner’s birthday weekend while visiting York on the Saturday and Yorkshire Air Museum on the Sunday. The location worked perfectly for us and felt very accessible for getting around. We used the Askham Bar park and ride for York city centre which was spot on.
Our room was cosy but well appointed and had lots of character, I particularly loved the fireplace feature. The bed was very comfortable and everything felt clean, from the bedding to the towels. There were lots of thoughtful touches too, including USB sockets, a fan already in the room (rather than needing to request one), a good tea/coffee selection with biscuits, and lovely Elemis products in the bathroom and shower.
The shower had good water pressure and temperature control, although I would note that it was quite slippery even with the textured base, so worth being aware of.
The receptionist (who I believe may also have been the duty manager) was really friendly and welcoming. She explained that our room was in a part of the hotel without a lift due to the age of the building and kindly offered help with our luggage up the two flights of stairs. The hotel itself is older, so some decor is a little dated, but I actually felt it suited the character and age of the building rather than feeling out of place.
The grounds were immaculately kept and lovely to look around. Reception was warm and inviting too. Some of the corridors looked a little tired with general wear and tear from being high traffic areas, and there were a few small maintenance issues in the room such as wallpaper scuffs and old wall holes needing filling, but nothing major enough to impact our stay.
The room was also very quiet. We honestly didn’t hear other guests overnight at all, only a little noise from doors closing in the morning when people were heading to breakfast.
Breakfast was served in a lovely room and the staff were very friendly and welcoming. There was a good buffet selection and I appreciated having two egg options available. The fried bread and hash browns were particularly good. My only criticisms would be that the toast machine made the toast look well done but it was actually quite soft and difficult to cut, and the eggs had become a little dry from sitting under the heat for a while. The scrambled eggs had a nice texture but could have done with a bit more flavour.
Overall I’d happily rate our stay 4/5. A few minor maintenance and breakfast improvements could easily lift it even further, but we enjoyed our stay and would definitely return.

The hotel is an attractive old vicarage with a lovely frontage. The coach house is a modern add on which is pleasant and fit for purpose building but dont expect any views. The location is handy for York with a regular bus service outside on the main road however we used Uber taxis which are always nearby and cost not much more than the bus. The hotel has an onsite pub called The Fat Abbot and Spa. The Spa is fantastic and probably the best in the area with Gym, Pool, 4 heat rooms and Jacuzzi. Food in the Fat Abbot is good. My only real criticism is we arrived at the pub for a beer about 10.15 pm and the staff were clearly disappointed to see us. It was evident they all wanted to finish and go home despite the pub stating it was open until 11 pm. I even asked them and they said that they had been there since 8am and wanted to finish. The bar lights were turned off, we downed our drinks quickly and we left. None the less the bar staff were pleasant but we did feel a tad uncomfortable.

Good experience
The Parsonage hotel is a 19th century building with an impressive frontage and has a traditional interior. The 'Coach House' is a modern add on which is standard and fit for purpose but dont expect any views. We had a triple room with my 17 year old daughter with us. Double and twin comfy beds and the room was spacious and clean. The hotel has an on site pub called the ' Fat Abbot' which does good food. There is also an on site Spa which is probably the best in York. It has a well equipped Gym, Pool, Jazzuci and four heat rooms as well as treatment rooms. There is a regular bus service ( 415.. Every 20 minutes) from outside the hotel to the center of York but we got an Uber which came in no time and takes about 10 minutes again to the center of York. The return trip is just as quick and easy. The only criticism I have is that we went to the ' Fat Abbot' about 10.15 pm and the staff were clearly fed up we had tipped up as they wanted to shut down and go home. They even admitted that to me saying they had been there since 8am and turned the bar lights off after asking if we intended staying for another drink ( It should be open until 11pm). But nevertheless the staff were pleasant and I appreciate they work hard. We went room only and were given the option of breakfast for £17.50 each but we did not take that option ( 7am until 9.30) I would certainly consider doing bed and breakfast booking in future. Overall a very good experience
