Totally worth paying for the Deluxe View Room
I am always surprised by the low rating for in-park lodges. I have stayed at a number of them and Far View Lodge is actually not bad, especially for its price! It was the cheapest accomodation on our 13-day road trip across CO. By staying here you saved lots of time driving into/ out of the park. And the view? A million-dollar view.
Definitely pay extra (it was only $20 more?) for the Deluxe View room. You will thank me! If you look at my photos, you can see the layout of the various buildings in relation to the Lodge itself. The Deluxe rooms are in the 2 buildings (B1 and B2) on either side of the main lodge. There is nothing to obstruct your view, and it lives up to its namesake - FAR VIEW. You can see all the way to New Mexico! The views especially at sunrise and sunset are incredible. Sadly we were there during full moon so no Milky Way, but I got up at 4am after moonset and had a clear view of the dark skies from my bed! I didn't even need to get up to go out to the Balcony. It is v dark except for minor light pollution from nearby Mancos. However, if you stay at the regular rooms, your balcony view will be looking at other buildings which have lights on, so that will affect your nightsky viewing pleasure.
The Deluxe room only applies to the view, it doesn't apply to the interior. The room itself is fine; it's a motel so walls are thin. OTOH, it's unlikely you will find your next door neighbor partying into the night. Every one who is there are there for the nature. We stayed 2 nights and I left our windows open both nights, falling asleep to the chirping of crickets. We also saw a lot of bats at dusk by the lodge.
The room itself is clean enough, the sheets are a bit rough and 2 of the 3 pillowcases are quite pilled. The sink is in the room outside of the bathroom. The toilet and shower is in the bathroom. There are no towel racks in the sink area to hang hand towels. The room has a mini-fridge and coffee maker, there is no microwave.
Wifi works surprisingly well for an in-lodge hotel! Far View Terrace was closed for the season. We ate at the upstairs lounge in the Lodge on the first night (cheaper prices, limited menu). Our second night we ate at Metate Restaurant. I was a bit upset that despite making a reservation weeks in advance (on Opentable), the host wanted to seat us at a 2-top in the middle of the room when there were plenty of open 2-tops by the window. I asked to move to a window seat. Throughout our dinner there were still plenty of 2-tops by the windows that stayed unoccupied, so I really do not understand why the host would not seat us there in the first place. The food was actually very good. I had the short ribs and my son had the salmon.

Close to the Park.
We stayed here for a few nights while we enjoyed Mesa Verde National Park. Convenient and easy to get to the Pueblo and visitor center. Great food and services.

From riches to rags
Unfortunately, the great added value of its location within Mesa Verde National Park is totally wiped out by very poor quality, even worse in light of the rate paid.
Very dirty room. Mini-fridge and "coffee station" located next to the sink, with soap dispenser and coat rack above it, not very hygienic...
In the bathroom, the fan was broken and all encrusted; instead of where the shampoo dispenser should have been, we found already-used sample bottles.
Air conditioning malfunctioning.
Although we are two people who adapt and certainly all this takes a backseat to what this country is giving us, for its price (which is justified given the location) the above should not happen...
Otherwise, it is better to drive a few more miles and sleep at the first Inn outside the park...

Like all national parks it was a bit rustic but it was nice staying within the park. The view from the small patio into the stars was great. The room was small and we could hear the people in the next room talking late into the evening.

Internet didn't work at all on day one then very spotty service. Booked "View" room got a partial view room. Restaurant had very long wait for breakfast. Convenient place to stay in the park
