Dated does NOT mean dirty.

Right before booking this hotel, I read some negative reviews here on TA and I realized that most of them were the SOLE contributions from guests that otherwise would never have bothered to visit the website at all, all of them displaying some childish rant. More recently, a review from July 11 published images from the hotel and hereby I question their validity because they seemed like they were taken too long ago, before linens were updated(enclosed are pictures from us proving this user wrong).
This has never been a chain hotel. It is indeed a 1914 building and it shows off on the musty odor on the lobby, and ONLY in the lobby. Someone here on TA based his entire review based on the lobby, well, it looks vintage, but you don't make a negative review just because you demand a modern entrance. We arrived way before check-in time, however we were pleasantly greeted by the staff who were willing to hold our luggage while we walked to a retail store in nearby Chinatown looking for a phone replacement for my husband.
Once we got back, we were led into family room 936 located on the back building, hence the existence of two elevators instead of one so no, there's nothing weird about two different elevators leading to two separate buildings. I'm always uneasy when it comes to elevators in general, but I looked on their maintenance notifications inside and they were up to date, so just because they don't run fast or you hear the classic 80's creepy elevator sound while it goes up or down doesn't mean that they're not functional.
Room 936 consists of two connecting bedrooms, one of them with a queen size bed, the other one with two twin beds, both with a private bathroom with toiletries, mirrors, drawers, a closet with hangers, and flat screen TV (we were a party of two adults and two teenagers). Our queen bedroom included an iron and ironing board inside the closet while the twin room had a hair dryer, microwave oven, ice bucket with paper cups, coffee/tea maker, and a fridge. Both rooms smelled good and were clean despite the outdated furniture(pictures enclosed). Our kids loved their beds and said they were comfy and my husband and I had a good sleep too. Both rooms had a nice city view and were not noisy. You can't control the temperature in your rooms, however, during the night it was cooler and that's what matters the most considering we stayed right at peak of summer(July 8-11). There were no USB ports but I expected it from a vintage building and we brought chargers so we relied on power outlets(just like in the majority of European hotels).
Housekeeping service was done on a daily basis, at least during our stay.
Breakfast is not complimentary, but we didn't mind because this hotel's flat rates were reasonable enough. They do have two dining options with similar names: Harry's Bar on the right corner of the building, and Harriet's for breakfast at the other side. We didn't get to visit Harry's but we had the buffet at Harriet's all three mornings. It is not pricey and breakfast was filling, including french toasts, assorted bread, assorted cereal, milk, water, coffee, juice, breakfast potatoes, bacon or sausage, scrambled and hard-boiled eggs, etc. There's a lady who so efficiently runs the place but not even her has been given a chance here on TA. She looks serious from the outside but I realized she's just straightforward about her job, all the while being courteous to us. On the second morning the place was empty when we left and she was taking our payment so I started to chit-chat with her, and she turned to be such a wonderful and pleasant lady to be with.
We did not use a car on the premises but I saw a couple of parking options nearby.
I need to address the "old and dirty" issue some reviewers complain about. Hotel Harrington is not only a historical building, but also the oldest lodging place in Washington DC and rejoices on its history, its outer appearance being almost untouched; it has never been sold to any chain or franchise, and up to date, it is the cheapest option right in the middle of the city, conveniently located in a safe neighborhood just steps away from the Metro station and within walking distance to restaurants and main attractions. This said, it's about time for the owners to invest on renovations so that it could appeal to even more guests, including replacing and/or eliminating room carpets, updating the A/C system and taking care of the humidity issue on the lobby. Regarding the state of the rooms, they ARE dated and tired, but not to the point of being a hazard!!! Even temperature and water pressure on the bathtub was great and no toilet issues whatsoever! Both rooms looked like a fancy, vintage home that just needed some TLC; other than that, our expectations were met and we got what we paid for, but if you're looking for something luxurious and modern, you can always stay at the Waldorf Astoria at the end of the street.... you just need a couple more years of savings to stay there.
Needless to say, I would stay here again in a heartbeat... please pay attention to my pictures! Stayed from July 8-11, 2023... thank you!

Not Nice

Great location, but a dive. Bathroom was about the size of a large closet. Musty smell. No idea how to run hvac and my room was freezing. I slept in a hoodie to keep warm. No counter space in the bathroom. I would never stay here again. It felt like staying at grandma’s house.

Perfect location. Very dated Hotel

Ok not writing anything new. The hotel is what I expected. It is old, rooms and hotel are very dated. It is in no way a nice hotel. It is clean and in a safe area. Great location ( you can walk to the mall, metro is also close by) and price is right.
DO NOT stay at the Harrington if:
*you plan to spend a lot of your time in your room
* you like nice hotels with modern amenities
Let’s face it if they updated the hotel the nightly rate would probably at least double.
If you book just enjoy the location so you can explore DC and spend the money you saved on a nice dinner

Historical Hotel - Recommended for great location and price

I picked this hotel for the location and the price. Recognizing it was an older (historical) hotel, my expectations were not high. Nevertheless, I was happy with my choice and would recommend it. We stayed in a double bed room, which was small. Being in DC, however, we were really in the room to sleep and shower, so the size did not matter. I loved that it was in walking distance for so much. The staff was super friendly, and it had the cheapest bottled water and t-shirts in town in the gift shop! We stayed out walking the monuments until well after midnight, and we felt safe returning to the hotel that late. The air conditioning did not get very cold, and it was a hot stay. We did get some relief from opening the window, but there were no screens, and after seeing multiple rats on the streets of DC at night, I really didn't want to leave the window open. There was only one open outlet under the desk, which made it difficult for charging multiple devices. No outlets in our bathroom. Overall, however, the room was clean and it met all of our needs for a two-night stay. We did eat at both restaurants. Not stellar food, but convenient for a quick bite. The Hard Rock Cafe was just a block away, which made for a great meal the second night. The parking garage we chose by Starbucks was opened odd hours through an office building. When I forgot something, we had to walk the ramp down to the car, which was long since we were on the third level. The hotel was close to the blue line, which was convenient for getting to the Arlington Cemetery.

Great "home base"

The Hotel Harrington was entirely satisfactory for my 3-day trip to DC. No wasted time to take the metro into the city, as you are right in the thick of things. The weather was quite hot & muggy, but the room was nice and cool. The bed was very comfy and the room was very clean. The people were nice.
Don't have any big negatives. It IS a classic, old hotel but kept up nicely. It is not the latest flashy thing, but it IS quite nice.
